(AP) ? The day before his team took the field for its Champs Sports Bowl matchup with Notre Dame, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher acknowledged that he had higher hopes for his team than how they ended up in 2011.

Loaded with talent and expectations in the preseason, the No. 25 Seminoles squandered early season opportunities against ranked foes and fizzled again late in the year to end any path back to the Bowl Championship Series.

Thursday night's 18-14 win over Notre Dame in front of a sellout crowd at Florida's Citrus Bowl might not have been the national stage FSU expected to be on this season, but how it won the game could be proof it is finally making progress.

The Seminoles rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit and used a pair of touchdown passes by E.J. Manuel and two field goals from Dustin Hopkins to earn their fourth straight bowl win and second under Fisher.

"I'm proud to coach this football team," Fisher said. "... We've had a lot of trials and tribulations...But that team has special character about it."

FSU receiver Rashad Greene, who caught one of Manuel's touchdown passes, was selected the game's MVP.

"We had a very good finish," Manuel said. "We play for each other, not individual stats and performance. We just beat Notre Dame. We're going to feel good for months."

The Seminoles finished the game with 290 yards, including going 3 for 14 on third down, and got an efficient night from Manuel. He played behind a young offensive line, but was 20 for 31 passing for 249 yards.

Injuries forced the Seminoles to start four freshman on their line and they gave up five sacks, but their defense picked off Notre Dame quarterbacks Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix three times and also had four sacks.

Notre Dame shuffled between Rees and Hendrix throughout the game, but both struggled. They were a combined 19 for 35 and 187 yards passing.

FSU scored on all four of its red zone chances.

The Irish also were without their biggest offensive weapon late, with receiver Michael Floyd being forced to the sideline following a third quarter touchdown catch with what coach Brian Kelly described afterward was an "upper body injury."

He returned to the game, but was a non-factor.

"It started in South Florida," said Kelly of the Irish's recurring theme of turnovers and missed opportunities. "And it continued to shoot itself throughout the entire year. We know what we need to do. We've already talked about it, and the players that are going to be back for the 2012 football season will be committed to getting that end done."

Junior linebacker Manti Te'o, who led Notre Dame with 13 tackles and got in on a sack Thursday, said fatigue was not a factor in the Irish not being able to maintain pressure on Manuel in the fourth quarter.

"They made their corrections and we just, as a defense, we just needed to get to the quarterback and we knew what E.J. could do back there when he had time...So that is something that we have to look at.

"We have a long time to prepare for next year, and when that time comes, that doesn't happen again."

After some stagnant offense on both sides in the first half, FSU trailed 14-0 early in the third quarter before finding some momentum through the air.

The Seminoles closed the gap to 14-9 with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Manuel to Bert Reed to open the fourth quarter, but failed on their 2-point conversion attempt.

They took the lead just 1:32 later after Nigel Bradham intercepted a Hendrix pass inside the Notre Dame 20 to set up an 18-yard touchdown catch by Greene to make it 15-14 with just over 13 minutes to play following another failed 2-point try.

The Seminoles added their second field goal of the game a series later.

Notre Dame punted on its next possession, but pinned FSU inside its own 5 and forced a quick three-and-out.

A poor punt by the Seminoles and a facemask penalty on the return gave the Irish the ball on the FSU 28 with 3:56 to play, but Rees was picked off in the end zone with 2:48 left and FSU was able run out most of the remaining time.

Notre Dame took a 14-0 lead on its opening drive of the second half by capping a nine-play, 62-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rees to Floyd. Floyd fought Seminoles cornerback Greg Reid for the ball on to play, juggling it multiple times before finally getting his hands around it.

Reid stayed down on the turf after the play and left the game with concussion symptoms.

FSU bounced right back with a 77-yard kickoff return by Lamarcus Joyner, but Notre Dame's fifth sack of the night on Manuel helped force the Seminoles to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Hopkins.

Safety Terrance Brooks, who had a late interception to help seal the win, said belief in themselves is the biggest thing they will carry into next season.

"Just go out there and do it," he said. "You know you've got it in you. We went out there and read our keys and got the job done."

British cops too blabby on Facebook

By Suzanne Choney

Some British police officers are being a bit too social on Facebook, and sometimes inappropriately so: 150 officers have been disciplined, at least two fired and seven forced to quit because of comments or photos they shared on the social networking site between 2008 and 2010.

The information was released to the Press Association, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents from a government investigation about police corruption. Among the findings: There is a "significant blurring" between officers' personal and professional lives on social networking sites such as Facebook, and that officers' activities on such sites may need to be monitored from now on.

The officers in question ? from 41 of 43 police forces in England and Wales ? used Facebook to share information about police operations, or indicate they helped attack members of the public during protests, and in some cases got quite personal, posting inappropriate photos or harassing former colleagues.

"We found a significant blurring between people's professional lives on social networking sites and their private lives which may be in the public domain and private lives which probably should remain extremely private," said Roger Baker, who led the investigation for Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper noted that one officer was fined three days' pay "after he called for violence against suspects in custody."

Under a video of a youth with a knife being tackled by officers in a police station, he wrote: "Look at this stupid c***, hope he gets a good f****** shoeing in the cells."

A total of 187 complaints were made "against officers over their use of Facebook, with nine officers being given final written warnings, 47 given written warnings and one given a formal warning," the newspaper said. "A further 88 were subject to management action, received guidance or words of advice, while 32 complaints were either withdrawn, found to be unsubstantiated or led to no further action."

The government report, called "Without Fear Or Favor: A Review Of Police Relationships," also noted that it's not just the lower ranks of officers who need to be more careful on Facebook.

"Any lack of clarity felt by staff is not helped by the example set by some senior officers who include what might be considered questionable force-related content or personal opinion in their own messaging."

Hungarian state TV staffers on hunger strike fired (AP)

BUDAPEST, Hungary ? Hungarian media officials say two employees who have been on hunger strike for over two weeks in protest at alleged political meddling with journalists' work in state-funded media have been fired.

MTVA, the state Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund, said Tuesday that Balazs Nagy Navarro and Aranka Szavuly were dismissed because their fast ? in which they have only been ingesting liquids since Dec. 10 ? is illegal and a "provocation" of their employer.

Nagy Navarro told the AP that the dismissals were "shameful and trample on legal security." He said six people were currently taking part in the hunger strike, including another state media employee and three activists.

Several media trade unions and opposition parties repudiated the dismissals.

App-y Christmas: 242 Million Downloads Sets New Record [STUDY] (Mashable)

Apparently, a lot of people spent Christmas Day turning on their new smartphones and downloading apps. Assessing the data from the busiest day of the year for activations and app downloads, Flurry Analytics found consumers shattered records for both this year. Activations topped 6.8 million, a 140% jump over Christmas Day 2010's 2.8 million, according to Flurry. Consumers downloaded 242 million apps that day, an increase of 125% over last year. The day caps off a strong year for both iOS and Android. Apple's App Store, which exceeded 10 billion downloads overall in January, is on track to post 10 billion downloads for 2011 alone. The Android Market, meanwhile, surpassed 10 billion downloads overall this month.

[More from Mashable: Infinity Blade 2 Teases Big Update to Make App Go Social]

Unfortunately, Flurry doesn't break down Android downloads vs. iOS. "Frankly, they're neck and neck," says Peter Farago, vp of marketing for Flurry, who adds that the company chooses not to share that data with the public. Android's share of the smartphone market was 43.7% vs. 27.3% for iOS in August, according to comScore.

Flurry also tracked app downloads for all of Christmas Day and found a big increase around 9 a.m. and then another jump around 11 a.m. The amount stayed at that level until about midnight. (Time zones were "normallized" in the research, so 9 a.m. in London, New York and San Francisco were all considered 9 a.m.)

[More from Mashable: The 10 Best Android Games of 2011]

The "appy Christmas" is expected to continue. Flurry is predicting that between Christmas and New Year's Day, consumers will download 1 billion apps.

Clues sought in house fire that killed 5

Investigators were talking to a New York City advertising executive and an acquaintance who survived a Christmas morning house fire that killed her three daughters and her parents to try to determine what caused the blaze.

Madonna Badger, who was having work done on the home she bought for $1.7 million last year, was released from hospital Monday.

The home was demolished Monday due to the fire damage and safety concerns.

Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died.

Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa at Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store in Manhattan. "Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. on Christmas morning and rushed outside to help, but they could only watch in horror as flames devoured the grand home and the shocked, injured survivors were led away from the house.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.

The fire might have been related to a fireplace on the first floor, a source familiar with the case told NBCNewYork.com.

Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The male acquaintance who also escaped the blaze was a contractor who was doing work on the home, Stamford police Sgt. Paul Guzda said. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

"It is a terrible, terrible day," Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire on Sunday. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

The Stamford Advocate identified the contractor as a male friend named Michael Borcina.

Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning. The Badgers reportedly are separated.

Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte, his voice cracking with emotion.

"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."

A neighbor who lives across the street, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and saw that the house was engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

He told The Advocate that he later learned the screams were coming from Madonna Badger.

"The reason she was screaming, of course, was because her family was inside the house," he said.

Cingari said he did not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it.

Charles Mangano, who lives nearby, said his wife woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He ran outside to see if he could help and saw fire trucks in front of the house.

"I heard someone yell 'Help, help, help me!' and I started sprinting up my driveway," Mangano told The Advocate.

He told the newspaper he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a T-shirt with no shoes and a woman being taken out of the house.

Video: Conn. house fire kills 5 on Christmas (on this page)

The woman said, "My whole life is in there," Mangano said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

The house was undergoing heavy construction last summer, he told The Advocate.

Badger's father known as 'Happy Santa'
Badger's parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, were going to celebrate their 49th anniversary on Monday, a family member told The New York Times. Lomer Johnson, 71, had spent Saturday working as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, a gig he had been doing since retiring as a safety director for the parent company of Jack Daniels.

The man with the long white beard loved posing as Santa, said the relative, who asked not to be named.

?That?s all he ever wanted to be,? the family member told The Times. ?He stopped shaving the day he retired.?

He advertised his services through a site called gigmasters.com, where he referred to himself as "Happy Santa." His profile reads "I am now a santa because my oldest granddaughter asked me to be a pretend Santa Claus. I have enjoyed it more than any job I've ever had."

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Mark Wahlberg underwear ads for Calvin Klein.

Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.

Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? In the chaos after the Christmas terror attack on a Catholic church, one mortally wounded man cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa Catholic Church and dozens were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million have staged Christmas attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

On Monday, tried to clean the sanctuary of the damaged church, while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris. Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

"In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

"Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

Reds trade Wood, 2 others, to Cubs for Marshall

    Sean Marshall

    By DAN SEWELL

    updated 7:21 p.m. ET Dec. 23, 2011

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds acquired left-handed reliever Sean Marshall from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for young lefty starter Travis Wood and two other players.

It was the second time in a week that the Reds gave up several prospects for pitching help. They earlier sent four players, including Edinson Volquez, to San Diego for starter Mat Latos.

The 29-year-old, 6-foot-7 Marshall was 6-6 with a 2.26 ERA last season. He had five saves. The Reds have been in talks to try to re-sign closer Francisco Cordero, who became a free agent after last season.

"Sean has been one of the best and most durable relievers in baseball the last couple of seasons," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement.

The 24-year-old Wood made 35 starts for the Reds over two seasons. He finished 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 2011, with a stint in Triple-A after struggling early in the year.

The Cubs also get 24-year-old outfielder Dave Sappelt, who batted .243 in 38 games with the Reds, and 19-year-old infield prospect Ronald Torreyes, who batted .356 in 67 games for Class-A Dayton.

"Twenty-four-year old left-handed starters who have already had success in the big leagues don't grow on trees," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. "We had to give up a great relief pitcher in Sean Marshall and someone we were proud to call a Cub, but we think to acquire Wood and the two young guys, it was worth doing."

Wood made 17 starts for the Reds in 2010, going 5-4 with a 3.51 ERA. He took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies before giving up a double to Carlos Ruiz, and left after finishing the ninth with the game scoreless.

Wood began last season in the Reds' starting rotation, made 10 starts for Louisville, then returned to Cincinnati. He also had four relief appearances for Cincinnati.

"He had a little bit of a down year last year, a little bit of a sophomore slump, but we still think all the ingredients are there to make him an excellent starting pitcher in the big leagues and you tend to not be able to get guys like that after their strong rookie years," Epstein said. "But sometimes you have a chance to get them after they take a little bit of their lumps on the learning curve."

Wood said he relied too heavily on his cutter last season and "lost the ability to really stick that four-seam (fastball) in there." His control was off, but he also sees a shot at redemption in Chicago.

"I think it's a great opportunity for me," he said. "The Reds do have a lot of depth in their rotation. ... Hopefully, I can get to Chicago and make a difference."

Besides the addition of Latos, the Reds return starting pitchers Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Bronson Arroyo. Aroldis Chapman, a left-handed reliever in his first two seasons, is also a possible starter next season.

In another move, Cincinnati claimed reliever Josh Judy off waivers from Cleveland. The 25-year-old right-hander pitched in 12 games over four stints with the Indians last season, with no record and a 7.70 ERA. He was 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 23 saves at Triple-A Columbus.

Epstein said the Cubs could still use some more starting pitchers in their farm system and at the major league level. He also said they're weighing ace Matt Garza's trade value versus locking him into a long-term deal. The right-hander was tendered a contract last week and is eligible for arbitration.

"It's hard to find top-of-the-rotation-type guys, so if you have them and there's a way to keep them around, I think that's always compelling for the club," Epstein said. "Now, that said, we're in a mode where we have to listen on everybody. If there's a way to improve the long-term outlook for this club in a significant manner, then we just can't look past opportunities like that. We're not in a situation where we have to do anything with Garza, but generally, we're in the business right now of taking our short-term assets and turning them into long-term assets."

Samsung says TouchWiz keeps Galaxy S from Ice Cream Sandwich (Digital Trends)

Bad news?if you?re one of the 10 million or so people that owns a Samsung Galaxy S phone, you won?t be partaking in the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update that the other Galaxy smartphones will be getting next year.

Samsung recently announced that a number of the Galaxy line will be joining the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S in running Android 4.0 early 2012, but on the company blog they confirmed that the Galaxy S as well as the 7 inch Galaxy Tab ?will not be getting the upgrade.?

The reason for the upset? Samsung points out that the culpability lies with TouchWiz, Samsung Widgets, Video Calls and other functions which rob both the Galaxy Tab and the the Galaxy S of the necessary RAM or ROM to run the new OS without taking a hit in usability. There?s just no room for the Ice Cream Sandwich update.

The Verge points out that this comes as a major disappointment as the Galaxy S runs the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor and memory as the Nexus S, which is currently able to accommodate ICS, but of course the Samsung Nexus S doesn?t run TouchWiz.

Those of you that don?t want to shell out for a completely new phone for ICS, TechCrunch points to a fully functioning Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for the Galaxy S; TouchWiz gets the boot, though its supposedly not the smoothest. Keep in mind that if you go this route you?ll invalidate your warranty or you could possibly screw up your smartphone.

Some of the phones that are getting the ICS update include the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Note, and the Galaxy R. Owners will most likely get the update in the early months of 2012.

Calif. mansion goes for a steal: $14.1 million (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? A seaside mansion in San Diego that was used in TV commercials but never occupied has sold for $14.1 million ? a third of the original asking price.

The San Diego Union-Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rC8eCp) says "The Razor" ? an 11,000-square-foot estate built by noted architect Wallace E. Cunningham ? was purchased by an East Coast buyer and is in escrow.

The La Jolla home took six years to build and was completed in 2008 at a cost of about $34 million. Public records show it's the bankruptcy estate of Jimmy Cooksey Jr.

It was once featured in ads for Calvin Klein and Visa but was never occupied.

The original asking price of $45 million was repeatedly slashed. Several auctions this year were cancelled when nobody offered minimum bids.

Ditch GoDaddy's SOPA-Loving Butt and Get a Better Web Host at a Discount [Web Hosting]

Ditch GoDaddy's SOPA-Loving Butt and Get a Better Web Host at a DiscountIf you haven't heard, the ethically questionable web host known as GoDaddy is supporting SOPA. In addition to their terrible customer service and elephant-killing CEO, GoDaddy is backing the bill that wants to cripple your internet as if it's some sort of moral obligation. That means you can't expect GoDaddy to have your back if SOPA passes. They'll just shut you down for a potential violation. (Although apparently they're already doing that.) If you didn't get around to ditching them already, there's no time like a present. Here's how you can do it an even save some money in the process.

If you're ready to leave GoDaddy behind, you'll want to read our GoDaddy abandonment guide that'll walk you through the entire process. It might be a little tedious, but definitely worthwhile. Once you've left, however, you'll need to find a new host. Your favorite and ours has always been Dreamhost, but you may want to check out a few others as they're offering promo codes so you can have a host that opposes SOPA and saves you some money. Here's what's available:

    • HostGator is offering 50% off your first month of hosting with coupon code NOSOPA.
    • Namecheap (your top pick for domain name registrars) offers up coupon code SOPASucks, which will get you a $6.99 domain transfer to their registration service.
    • Name.com will give you 10% off any domains you want to transfer to them. They support .COM, .NET, .ORG, .TV, .INFO, .IN, .US, .CO, .ME, and .TEL. Just use coupon code NODADDY.
    • Hover.com is offering 10% off domain transfers with code SOPA. This includes their "transfer valet" service, in which they take care of all the tedious tasks that go along with moving a domain to a new registrar.

Switching web hosts is always a pain, but hopefully our guide and some savings should make the process much easier.

Thanks to Justin Boswell for the tip!

Study: Indoor Tanning Linked With Early Onset of Skin Cancer (Time.com)

Given that indoor tanning beds were officially classified as a human carcinogen in 2009 -- up there with cigarettes and asbestos -- it should be fairly obvious that frequent tanning-booth exposure would increase your risk of skin cancer.

Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is "convincing," according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer -- which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. -- has thus far been inconsistent. (See pictures of a photographer's intimate account of her mother's cancer ordeal.)

Basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer, has traditionally been a disease of middle age. But it's been appearing with increasing frequency in people under 40, especially in women -- a demographic that also happens to like indoor tanning -- suggesting a link. So researchers at the Yale School of Public Health sought to study the association.

The study included 376 people under 40, who had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2010. They were matched with a control group of 390 dermatology patients who were diagnosed with minor skin conditions like cysts and warts. All participants had skin biopsies, and all were drawn from a Yale University database.

The researchers interviewed each participant about their UV exposure -- both in tanning beds and outdoors. They also asked about their history of sunburns, sunscreen use, family history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and their self-reported eye, skin and hair color.

The conclusion: people who had ever used a tanning booth were 69% more likely to develop early-onset basal cell carcinoma than never tanners. Those who used tanning booths more regularly -- for at least six years -- were more than twice a likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, compared with never tanners.

The study found that women were far more devoted than men to indoor tanning, which might help explain why 70% of all early onset basal cell carcinomas occur in females. The authors concluded that about 27% of cases of early onset disease -- including 43% of cases in women -- could be prevented if people simply stopped using tanning booths.

That's a tall order, considering that some 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds each year. Policy changes, such as the recent California ban on teen tanning, may help, the authors suggest. So would behavioral interventions aimed at women -- at least one study in 2010 found that the best way to get young women to tan less was to warn them about the skin-wrinkling effects of tanning-bed exposure, not the risk of skin cancer.

"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for [basal cell carcinoma] indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer," said Leah M. Ferrucci, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health, in a statement.

Do Not Buy Dad a Tie

The indisputable fact is that cash is the most economically efficient gift. But cash is, in many cases, socially unacceptable, which means you need to pursue an alternative approach. Here your best bet is to show a taste for risk. The problem with presents is that you?re never going to do a better job of satisfying the gift-recipient?s preferences than she could do herself. But preference sets aren?t fixed. If someone had handed me $10, I never would have spent it buying the Cults album, for the simple reason that I hadn?t heard of the band. When it was given to me, I immediately checked it out and loved it. When you step outside the circle of things you know for sure your gift-getter likes, you risk creating a massive deadweight loss. (You give her a ticket to Las Vegas, without knowing that she hates gambling.) But with the greater risk comes a greater potential reward. You may introduce the recipient to something marvelous she would otherwise have never encountered. Giving stuff rather than cash is a way of saying you know better than the recipient what she really wants. The riskier the present, the more likely it is to generate significant benefit. (So, not a sweater.)

Motorola Xoom tablet gets an Ice Cream Sandwich makeover with 4.0.3

Only a day after Google released Android version 4.0.3, one XDA developer has already installed it on his Motorola Xoom WiFi tablet -- making it the first slate to run the frosty Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Of course, trendsetting is nothing new for the Xoom, which was also the first to ship with Honeycomb's sweetness back in February. Being first does have its disadvantages, though, as some of the features like the camera don't work, and there seems to be a green overlay on the screen from time to time. If you're willing to overlook these early adopter flaws, head on over to the source to satisfy your ICS-inspired sweet tooth and try it for yourself.

home > Finance > The Research on Harmony with Political Finance and Commercial Finance of Our Rural Area

?Abstract? Eleventh Five-year Plan demonstrates the construction of socialist new country. To carry out the task, it is a very important step for us to innovate and perfect rural financial service system and promote harmonious development of political finance and commercial finance to achieve strong back to agriculture financially. My thesis tries to make research on the coordination political finance and commercial finance of China from two factors of theory and practice and brings out corresponding suggestions.Firstly, the thesis brings out the definitions, characteristics, domains and necessity of commercial finance and political finance in our country. Then describe the relation of the two kinds of different finance historically from the theory of Restrain on Finance, Liberalization of Finance to Imperfect Market. Lastly, reveal the inner relationship of them. After the demonstration of theory, the thesis points out the problem of disagreement between them with a glimpse on the history of rural finance. Then we analyze the two cases, the one is to deal with the problem of farmer credit in Capital rural area and the other is A.B.C.?s dilemma on market target. At last, the main suggestion of the thesis is that we must combine political finance and commercial finance perfectly by the way of absorbing commercial finance on the basis of good rural financial environment driven by political finance and operation of political finance by commercialization.

    The onset of electrical resistance

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Researchers at the Max-Born-Institute, Berlin, Germany, observed the extremely fast onset of electrical resistance in a semiconductor by following electron motions in real-time.

When you first learned about electric currents, you may have asked how the electrons in a solid material move from the negative to the positive terminal. In principle, they could move ballistically or 'fly' through the solid, without being affected by the atoms or other charges of the material. But this actually never happens under normal conditions because the electrons interact with the vibrating atoms or with impurities. These collisions typically occur within an extremely short time, usually about 100 femtoseconds (10 -13 seconds, or a tenth of a trillionth of a second). So the electron motion along the material, rather than being like running down an empty street, is more like trying to walk through a very dense crowd. Typically, electrons move only with a speed of 1m per hour, they are slower than snails.

Though the electrons collide with something very frequently in the material, these collisions do take a finite time to occur. Just like if you are walking through a crowd, sometimes there are small empty spaces where you can walk a little faster for a short distance. If it were possible to follow the electrons on an extremely fast (femtosecond) time scale, then you would expect to see that when the battery is first turned on, for a very short time, the electrons really do fly unperturbed through the material before they bump into anything. This is exactly what scientists at the Max-Born-Institute in Berlin recently did in a semiconductor material and report in the current issue of the journal Physical Review Letters [volume 107, 256602 (2011)]. Extremely short bursts of terahertz light (1 terahertz = 10 12 Hz, 1 trillion oscillations per second) were used instead of the battery (light has an electric field, just like a battery) to accelerate optically generated free electrons in a piece of gallium arsenide. The accelerated electrons generate another electric field, which, if measured with femtosecond time resolution, indicates exactly what they are doing. The researchers saw that the electrons travelled unperturbed in the direction of the electric field when the battery was first turned on. About 300 femtoseconds later, their velocity slowed down due to collisions.

In the attached movie, we show a cartoon of what is happening in the gallium arsenide crystal. Electrons (blue balls) and holes (red balls) show random thermal motion before the terahertz pulse hits the sample. The electric field (green arrow) accelerates electrons and holes in opposite directions. After onset of scattering this motion is slowed down and results in a heated electron-hole gas, i.e., in faster thermal motion.

The present experiments allowed the researchers to determine which type of collision is mainly responsible for the velocity loss. Interestingly, they found that the main collision partners were not atomic vibrations but positively charged particles called holes. A hole is just a missing electron in the valence band of the semiconductor, which can itself be viewed as a positively charged particle with a mass 6 times higher than the electron. Optical excitation of the semiconductor generates both free electrons and holes which the terahertz bursts, our battery, move in opposite directions. Because the holes have such a large mass, they do not move very fast, but they do get in the way of the electrons, making them slower.

Such a direct understanding of electric friction will be useful in the future for designing more efficient and faster electronics, and perhaps for finding new tricks to reduce electrical resistance.
