Israel to return ancient coffin lids to Egypt

JERUSALEM (JTA) ? Israel will return to Egypt the lids of two ancient sarcophagi that had held mummies.

The coffin lids were confiscated in Jerusalem in April by the Israel Antiquities Authority, according to media reports.

The ancient decorated wooden covers, determined to be authentic and thousands of years old, were stolen from Egypt and smuggled first to Dubai and then to a European country before arriving in Israel. They were sawed in half to allow for their easy transport, causing irreparable damage to the ancient items.

They were discovered during a raid of antiques shops in the Old City of Jerusalem by inspectors of the Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery.

The coffin covers likely were brought to Israel in order to obtain authentication documentation that would allow them to be exported and sold abroad to the highest bidder. The documentation would have identified them as being discovered in Israel.

Archos GamePad: 7" Android Tablet With Game Controls Built For ...

archos-gamepad-7q-android-tablet-built-for-retro-gamingAs retro gamers we're incredibly lucky at the wealth of available hardware we can use to get our classic gaming fix. With modern consoles and smartphones providing access to our gaming past, we're never too far away from the classics. The latest newcomer capable of feeding our retro addiction is the 7" Archos GamePad.

The Archos GamePad is the newest Android device to come with a built in D-pad and dual analog sticks for the sole purpose of gaming. Whilst the device is being aimed at modern gamers, the RetroCollect Squad have other plans for this rather impressive looking handheld. What might these plans be you ask? Well, take a look at our expansive guide to retro gaming emulators on Android devices and you'll see.

Given the high-end Sony PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 emulators work fantastically even on last year's Android enabled devices, we're very much anticipating how well they'll run on this dual core device. As for just about every other older system, we expect nothing but near perfect retro gaming emulation on the Archos GamePad. Hopefully our predictions will be met upon release next month.

Love Or Arranged- Marriage is Marriage : Parenting tips for Indian ...

?

Here at The Mom Views, I hardly ever talk about my personal life except for may be an occasional picture or two. But recently I have been itching to write on a topic which is as old as men & women themselves. Love Marriage Vs Arranged Marriage.?

This blog is all about Parenting and I reckon sometime in the future I might have to give some relationship advice to my daughter (since husband will never accept that his lil princess has grown up enough to have a relationship let alone a marriage). So I am taking this opportunity to record for posterity my thoughts on Love marriage, Arranged Marriage, Marriage and a Happy Marriage.

A Little Background

I met my husband when we both were in our teens ( no high school romance though) and now I have known him for almost 14 years which for most people is a lifetime. Ours was no fairy tale romance with electrifying chemistry or hot-headed promises of bringing the stars or moon. It was rather a friendship of stolen glances, quiet admiration and mutual trust which slowly developed into love (I am hesitant to use this word because it is used too callously nowadays).

Within a few months of knowing each other my husband went to a different state for his study of medicine and we started a hesitant, long distance relationship. In the age of smartphones, texting, Facebook likes and instant messaging, our relationship might look like a quaint and vintage love story. A story where the boy met the girl once in may be two months and talked on the phone once in a fortnight.

It took almost 4 years for us to realize that this was more than a strong liking to and a marriage to each other was inevitable. Yes, inevitable because we knew that we balanced and made each other happy in a way that no one else could. Although soul mates is an extremely loaded word, what we felt for each other can only be described like that.

The Long Way Ahead

Once we were sure that we wanted to get married it was now the turn for our families to agree. Oh, by the way did I mention that I happen to be a Keralite Catholic and my husband a Hindu Punjabi. Yeah, that!!

For a few years there was a lot of passive aggression shown by both sets of families, constant nagging (mainly our moms), strong silent spells (mostly our dads) and petty taunts (the relatives-but that is their job right!!). The one thing that we never faced was the ugly side of such relations. No one from his family was ever mean to me or vice-versa.

Eventually after 4 more years, it took my husband?s 86 year old grandmother to show the light to our families. She emphatically put her foot down and said that they have been together for too long to change their ways. Since we were pretty clear that our marriage had to be solemnized with the blessings of everyone and our parents had pretty much resigned to the fact that their children might remain unmarried for ever if they did not agree, our marriage was fixed.

The next few months were a blur. Understanding each other?s rituals and customs, getting the extended families on board with the marriage, finalizing the wedding plans and so on. Finally on a cold wintry and rainy day my husband and I got hitched to each other both in a church and by hindu customs (all in the same day). His relatives could not compliment enough the peaceful and beautiful service in the church and the delicious malayali food. My relatives from?Kerala?were over the moon having witnessed a true blue?Punjabi?wedding (?Just like the movies?). Everyone was happy and no one could have been euphoric than me and my husband to see every one rejoice in our happiness.

Down the Road

It has been almost six years of marriage and our relationship has had its share of ups and downs. From my struggle to fit into the family (I started speaking real?Punjabi?within one year of marriage), my inner turmoil of remaining true to my self, the birth of my beautiful daughter to the daily chaos of our lovely life-Life has been pretty much a?roller coaster and Wedded Bliss can certainly be used for our life.

Life may not have panned out exactly like we pictured, there were some unexpected twists and turns in our life which put a lot of pressure on us. There were times when I smiled, cried, screamed and laughed so hard that my ribs hurt. But what remained constant was our admiration of each other ( we are each other?s biggest cheer leaders) and the mutual trust.?

What I learnt about Marriage so far?

Marriage begins the day you are done with your wedding. There is only a LOVE WEDDING OR AN ARRANGED WEDDING. But Marriage? It is the same for everyone whether the couple has met each other ten years ago or ten days ago.?

Marriage is a work-in-progress. Even after knowing my husband for around 14 years, there are things about him that constantly surprise me ( some pleasantly, some not so much!) and I am sure it is the same with him. It really does not matter whether you have known a person for a long time because when you live with them, they WILL BE DIFFERENT. What matters is how accepting you are of them, how?accommodating?you are and how much of a sense of humor do you have. Trust me, sense of humor should be a prerequisite for marriage.?

Adjustment is good but Compromise is a no-no. When you adjust with each other it means that you give and take space to remain true to yourself while making sure the other person is not uncomfortable. But when you compromise then you change who you are, which is never good for anyone.

Marry for the right reasons. Do not marry some one because they are a habit or because you think you can change them. No one changes or for that matter should change for another person because then it is never sustainable. If a person changes from within, it should be self driven because that it is the only way it will remain permanent.

You should grow old with each other. Not just literally but figuratively too. Often one person remains the same through out their marriage while the other person keeps growing their personality, their life and their minds. After a few years they find that they are living with a stranger. Both partners should grow together. Communication, respect, friendship, freedom and love (again that word!) are the must haves for any relation to grow and maintain itself over a period of time.

I have nothing against arranged marriages, where families come together to join two people in holy matrimony, provided the couple is banking on more than just their families to keep the marriage working. Similarly love marriage is not evil as long as the two people involved know that chemistry is not everything because eventually you need the patience, maturity, ?the security of relationships and the experience of elders to keep the fire going. A love marriage which gets arranged (like ours did) is probably the best scenario but keep in mind that marriage is hard work whether you fall in love before the wedding or after.?

If you would like to read more opinions on this topic and may be some more real love stories then a good place to start is probably the facebook page of Sony Television?s new tv show-Love Marriage Ya Arranged Marriage. Trust me, everyone has an opinion on this!

If you have any marriage advice you would like to share with the readers or may be your kids in future

then don?t forget to comment below

Disclosure: I am entering this post on Indiblogger-Sony TV Love Marriage or Arranged Marriage contest. Every vote means a compliment from you guys, so don?t forget to vote on Indiblogger now.?

(Reuters) - Image sensor maker OmniVision Technologies Inc reported first-quarter revenue that beat analysts' expectations, and the company forecast current-quarter sales well above estimates, sending its shares up 9 percent in extended trade.

The company, which makes back-lit image sensors for most of Apple Inc's products, forecast second-quarter adjusted earnings of between 21 cents to 37 cents per share on revenue of $355 million to $390 million.

HBT: Good news for Dodgers' Kemp

Matt Kemp is out of the Dodgers? lineup today after injuring his knee and jaw crashing into the center field wall last night, but the news is actually pretty good.

Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times reports that an MRI exam on his knee and a CAT scan on his jaw both showed no major damage.

Kemp initially stayed in the game last night, which was pretty amazing considering he ran into the wall at full speed, but he eventually exited later in the inning. For this afternoon Shane Victorino shifts from left field to center field, with Juan Rivera starting in left field.

Attrition: A Customer Relationship Opportunity | TOP Step Consulting

Written by: Jodi Cicci, President and CEO, TOP Step Consulting LLC

When an employee leaves for another job opportunity, it may be difficult to fill the hole, especially if he or she is responsible for managing a number of projects, initiatives, or engagements with your key customers. These projects will need a new team leader or manager?so how do you approach finding someone to fill those shoes? Some factors to consider include:

  • Who is available?
  • Who is best qualified for the particular project scope?
  • Does anyone have a previous positive experience with the customers?
  • Can someone from within the existing team be promoted or take on extra work?
  • What stage is the project in, and is a replacement really required?

A starting point might be to pinpoint someone who is available, and then begin narrowing down the field by skill sets and customer experience. This serves the operational management needs of increasing utilization, as you may be pulling someone off the bench or using a resource that is scheduled to free up shortly. Sounds like a solid approach, but have you considered the following questions?

  • How long will it take for a new person to gain an understanding of the project?
  • How will the person be received by the customer? How long until a solid relationship is in place?
  • Do you know what the customer likes about the current lead and what they disliked?
  • Do you have a consistent methodology in place so a new lead would follow the practices of the current lead?
  • And, again, what stage is the project in?

Now you are looking at your employee attrition through the eyes of the customer. Their project is your connection to one another and forms the basis for the relationship between customer and vendor. If the project is not going well, then the relationship is strained. Handling attrition of your team lead or project manager is an opportunity for your organization to enhance the customer relationship in place and demonstrate your ability to smoothly and adeptly handle change as a normal part of business.

The ?what stage is the project in? question is listed twice above. This is because it is an important consideration in determining how to handle the employee replacement question. If the project has just started, or is in an early discovery phase, the replacement of an employee with another qualified and skilled lead may be the best option. Early project stages tend to allow quicker ramp-up, as there isn?t much historical or legacy information to learn and customer relationships are still evolving as project activities start up.

What if the project is in the middle of, or approaching, a critical test window? I?d argue that promoting from within the existing team would be a priority in order to allow continued progress with little disruption. Promoting from within may not always be possible, but quite often I?ve found that teams rally together when projects enter critical phases and individuals stand out, which can help with the transition. Backfilling a team member such as a developer or trainer may be a bit easier than a lead resource since they would be coached by the team and not have to work on both the project ramp-up and the customer relationship at the same time.

And, finally, what about projects approaching the end of their life cycle, such as a go-live date with support afterward? Does a new lead need to be appointed? This is a good topic to discuss with the customer, because they may feel autonomous by this point or may simply desire a point of contact for escalations without the formal team structure going forward.

In all of these cases, the customer needs to be aware of the plan. This gives you, as the employer and vendor, the opportunity to have direct management contact with the client. The employee or team lead will most likely have initial conversations with the customer, but I would say that management has an opportunity here to advance their relationship with the client and also demonstrate their recognition of customer importance. By getting involved as a manager, you can ensure that you know the customer situation personally, you?ll be able to answer all those questions above regarding what they like and don?t like, and you can provide a communication path that the customer may leverage to provide feedback?both bad and good.

Taking the time to ensure you select the right resource to meet the project and customer needs will demonstrate your professionalism as a company and your depth of skill sets among your team. As an added bonus, you?ll also be advertising how your methodology promotes success in light of unexpected risks.

Systems Thinking HR, Recruiting, Social Media Policies, Human ...

Today?s Successful Leaders

A few years back, I learned about and quickly embraced the?Systems Thinking?approach to business. I was encouraged to read a book called? The Fifth Discipline?by?Peter Senge?and I took a couple of courses related specifically to this topic. Systems thinkers look an awful lot like today?s successful leaders. Understanding that we all must work together to achieve success is part of this approach. Problems do not become an issue or represent a setback, they are merely thought of as forces of change or underlying trends.

Recognize the strength of interrelationships

The inner workings of an organization,?not individuals or a single events, are what create a true system. The ongoing process becomes the primary focus in this type of thinking. Peter Senge believes that it is often poorly designed systems which cause breakdowns or failures, not poorly motivated people. Outside forces affect the reactions and responses of the inside individuals.?This is a system.?

Force in Numbers

Tightly-focused actions have more impact and produce lasting changes if they are spun with the right force and attached to the right influence. This is called leverage. For example, sharing a new or refined business practice with the entire work group will have more impact than if each individual had been instructed separately. There is?force in numbers?- you?ve?heard this.

A couple years ago, I called a family meeting. We,?not?I?alone, had an important decision to make and I felt a conclusion could be reached with more acceptance if I leveraged it as a group decision, not mine alone or one that was easily influenced by one individual over another. We had to decide if it was better for our family to move closer to my work or continue the headlong fight to stay in our current home. We aired everyone?s opinions, looked at the 10,000-foot view and the 10-foot view. It was important to me that each voice was heard and that each brain behind the individual voices understood the pros and the cons of our decision.

My then 13-year old son came up with just as many valid points as my twenty-one year old daughter. It is never easy to make such an impactful decision. But the pros and cons list, as well as the free speech granted legal and important to this matter made a difference in how we all felt about the decision and how that decision was ultimately supported. We,?my family, are a system.

My department at work is another system, with several influences. Our company, as a whole, is yet another system, with even more influences and multiple focused actions by each department. Everything I do, whether it is driving on a busy highway or withdrawing money from my checking account, is part of another system.

When all my systems are go and functioning at their best capacity, it means my family is, my work is, my world is. ?It means I am.

It Takes More than a village, it takes a universe.
My universe.

New York Times Sells About.com for $300 Million - Small Business ...

Buying or selling a business is a huge decision for those on either side of the transaction. Whether your company is the size of The New York Times or a small mom and pop, be sure you weigh the pros and cons carefully before moving forward. As the iconic About.com changes hands for a substantial sum, here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your next big acquisition or sale.

Big Deal

Sold to the highest bidder. IAC, a conglomerate owning a variety of online properties including Ask.com, bought About.com, with an Alexa rank of 37 in the US and 80 worldwide for traffic, from The New York Times Company for around $300 million this week, beating out an offer from Answers.com of $270 million in debt and equity. The sale was for less than the $410 million the newspaper company paid for the site back in 2005. TechCrunch

The biggest sale of your life. For most owners, the sale of a business will be the biggest of their lives. With so much riding on the outcome, it?s critical to get the process right. So it?s surprising that when the time finally comes, so many owners miss the opportunity to maximize the value they get from that business and the chances the sale will go successfully. The Guardian

Taking yourself out of the equation. If you want your business to be more valuable to an acquirer, the first step is to make sure it can operate and grow without you. For many entrepreneurs, this is a challenge not just because of the passion they have for their business. It?s also because many business leaders have allowed themselves to become indispensable to their company?s day to day operations. Inc.com

Virtual Value

Pleased to meet you, Alexa. When selling your Web business, one important factor to consider is your Alexa ranking. Though there are some issues with how Alexa calculates a Website?s ranking, the value can be important for a variety of reasons. Here are some tips for raising your ranking as a strategy to increase the value of your site. The Frugal Entrepreneur

Flipping your site on Flippa. Flippa, the Website best known as a place to buy and sell other Websites, has developed a tool to help provide valuations based on earnings, search rankings, and other factors. But some aren?t so sure the tool can be trusted. Here, Hesham Zebida gives his review of the new Flippa beta and a few more Website valuation tools out there. Famous Bloggers

Buyer Beware

Sizing up your opportunities. The greatest challenge in buying a business is determining whether it is worth the price you will pay. To figure this out, it?s necessary to exercise due diligence and look beneath the surface. Here are some suggestions from an example in which a potential buyer is determining whether purchasing a fitness business is worth the investment. Chron.com

Going for broke. One step to consider when trying to buy a business is to hire a broker to give you a hand in your search. The right broker can find you a business in your particular niche, help you secure financing, and assist you in a number of other ways when it comes to acquiring the business that is right for you. CNOOC-Nexen takeover must be in Canada's best interest: Harper

Stephen Harper calls the takeover bid for Calgary-based Nexen a deal with significant implications for the Canadian economy in the short and long term

CAMBRIDGE BAY, Nunavut ? The prime minister says the proposed takeover of a Canadian oil-and-gas producer by a Chinese state-owned firm must be in the best long-term interest of Canada.

Stephen Harper calls the takeover bid for Calgary-based Nexen a deal with significant implications for the Canadian economy in the short and long term.

Harper says careful scrutiny of the US$15.1-billion transaction deal is required and it will involve a range of considerations and a clear long-term policy direction.

?Our government will take the time we have to properly scrutinize this transaction and to assess that, if it is to go ahead, that it will only go ahead if it is in the best long-term interest of the Canadian economy,? he said.

The China National Offshore Oil Company ? also known as CNOOC Ltd. ? proposed takeover of Nexen was a friendly bid.

Harper made the comments while in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, as part of his northern tour, which has focused on promoting natural resources development in Canada.

Share Web pages in Chrome for iOS via Facebook, Twitter, and G+

In its continuing quest for mobile browsing supremacy, Google updated Chrome for iOS yesterday. The biggest change the update brings is new sharing options. Now, Chrome for iOS boasts more ways to share a Web page than Mobile Safari.

With Mobile Safari, you have two sharing options: e-mail and Twitter. With Chrome for iOS, you now can share via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, and G+.

To share a page, tap the action button in the upper-right corner and you will see that the previous Email option has been renamed Share. Tap Share and a small window appears with your four sharing options.

If you are using Chrome for iOS and have grown frustrated that you can't set it as your default browser, Jason Cipriani has a workaround you might enjoy. And in other mobile Google news, learn how to scribble searches on your phone or tablet with Google Handwrite.

Lovely Living With These Home Improvement Tips - Equipment and ...

If you are on a limited budget and wish to improve your home, there are probably things that you can do yourself. Read these tips to find out more about home improvement and the amazing possibilities. Home improvement can save you a lot of money while you fix your home yourself.

If the caulking surrounding your tub is stained or mildewed, consider replacing it. With less than an hour of work, your bathroom will look much nicer. Use a screwdriver or other tool to remove the old caulking, and ensure that the surface is dry before applying the new caulking. Look for a variety specifically meant for bathrooms; many of these also resist mildew growth.

Exterior lighting will give you peace of mind at night, and add beauty to your landscaping. Consider motion sensor lighting, as this will reduce the amount of energy used when the outdoors are not occupied, and can also frighten away unwanted animals or even prowlers. Install the lights in strategic places, such as the exact area visible to you from a window, and the path from your vehicle to the front door.

Communicate with your significant other. You should both be clear on what you want done and what the specific project is going to consist of. Rather than assigning tasks for each other, find out what they want to do and what they are good at. This will take pressure off of you during the project.

Making sure that your basement is weatherproof is the first step to creating a living space in there. If your basement is dry and never leaks or floods, it is a great way to save money on your renovation. Police want to put gun safes in schools

By NBCChicago.com and NBC News staff

Four high schools in an Illinois school district could get some firepower for added protection if the Police Department has its way.

Police in Plainfield, a town of 37,000 about 40 miles southwest of Chicago, asked the district to install locked gun safes to keep a rifle and important information at several schools in the event there's a shooter on campus, according to Plainfield School District 202.

The safe could include a "long gun, such as an AR 15 rifle," according to the request, and would be stored in the offices of school police officers, who would be the only ones with access.

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

The request was made for Plainfield Central Campus, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Plainfield Academy. Plainfield South High School was not be included.

"Unfortunately, in today?s society active shooter incidents are no longer something we see on TV,"?Police Chief John Konopek said in a statement. "They are reality."

Plainfield hasn't experienced a campus shooting, and Konopek said he wants to keep it that way.

"We have found, through our training, officers are much better equipped to handle this type of incident utilizing a long gun ? rather than a handgun," he said.

The school board has not yet voted on the request. A committee is set to review it Sept. 19.

The debate over how to best protect students and staff in the nation's schools has increased in the last few years.

"A lot of (school) boards don't even want police with guns on campus," Peter Pochowski of the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officials, told NBC News.

Pochowski said he's not aware of any other school in the nation at which police use safes for gun storage on campus.

One Texas school district?allows teachers and staff members to bring guns in order to deter and protect against school shootings.?

The Harrold Independent School District approved the measure in 2008 partly because?of the 30-minute drive it would take for police to respond to an emergency on school grounds.?The district has only one school, with all students attending class in the same building.

A little music training goes a long way: Practicing music for only few years in childhood helps improve adult brain

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? A little music training in childhood goes a long way in improving how the brain functions in adulthood when it comes to listening and the complex processing of sound, according to a new Northwestern University study.

The impact of music on the brain has been a hot topic in science in the past decade. Now Northwestern researchers for the first time have directly examined what happens after children stop playing a musical instrument after only a few years -- a common childhood experience.

Compared to peers with no musical training, adults with one to five years of musical training as children had enhanced brain responses to complex sounds, making them more effective at pulling out the fundamental frequency of the sound signal.

The fundamental frequency, which is the lowest frequency in sound, is crucial for speech and music perception, allowing recognition of sounds in complex and noisy auditory environments.

"Thus, musical training as children makes better listeners later in life," said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern.

"Based on what we already know about the ways that music helps shape the brain," she said, "the study suggests that short-term music lessons may enhance lifelong listening and learning."

"A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood" will be published in the Aug. 22 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We help address a question on every parent's mind: 'Will my child benefit if she plays music for a short while but then quits training?'" Kraus said.

Many children engage in group or private music instruction, yet, few continue with formal music classes beyond middle or high school.

But most neuroscientific research has focused on the rare and exceptional music student who has continued an active music practice during college or on the rarer case of a professional musician who has spent a lifetime immersed in music.

"Our research captures a much larger section of the population with implications for educational policy makers and the development of auditory training programs that can generate long-lasting positive outcomes," Kraus said.

For the study, young adults with varying amounts of past musical training were tested by measuring electrical signals from the auditory brainstem in response to eight complex sounds ranging in pitch. Because the brain signal is a faithful representation of the sound signal, researchers are able to observe how key elements of the sound are captured by the nervous system and how these elements might be weakened or strengthened in different people with different experiences and abilities.

Forty-five adults were grouped into three age- and IQ- matched groups based on histories of musical instruction. One group had no musical instruction; another had 1 to 5 years; and the other had to 6 to 11 years. Both musically trained groups began instrumental practice around age 9 years, a common age for in-school musical instruction to begin. As predicted, musical training during childhood led to more robust neural processing of sounds later in life.

Prior research on highly trained musicians and early bilinguals revealed that enhanced brainstem responses to sound are associated with heightened auditory perception, executive function and auditory communication skills.

"From this earlier research, we infer that a few years of music lessons also confer advantages in how one perceives and attends to sounds in everyday communication situations, such as noisy restaurants or rides on the "L," Kraus said.

A running theme in Kraus' research is "your past shapes your present."

"The way you hear sound today is dictated by the experiences with sound you've had up until today," she said. "This new finding is a clear embodiment of this theme."

In past research, Kraus and her team examined how bilingual upbringing and long-term music lessons affect the auditory brain and how the brain changes after a few weeks of intensive auditory experiences, such as computerized training. Their current research is investigating the impact of socioeconomic hardships on adolescent brain function.

"We hope to use this new finding, in combination with past discoveries, to understand the type of education and remediation strategies, such as music classes and auditory-based training that might be most effective in combating the negative impact of poverty," she said.

By understanding the brain's capacity to change and then maintain these changes, the research can inform the development of effective and long-lasting auditory-based educational and rehabilitative programs.

Would you pay $10 for a can of air from Paris?

Using what appears to be a business plan inspired by the movie "Spaceballs," Kirill Rudenko, a Prague-based photographer, is selling "canned air" from Paris, New York and other major cities for $9.99 a pop.

The 3-and-a-half-inch cans--available through Rudenko's Etsy.com shop--come with wine-like labels that disclose the blend of concentrated air inside.

The Paris air formula, for example, is:

20% The Louvre
20% Notre Dame
25% Eiffel Tower
15% Mus?e d'Orsay
10% Champs-Elys?es
10% Sacre Coeur

New York's can contains:

20% Empire State Building
10% Grand Central Terminal
10% Chrysler Building
20% Statue of Liberty
10% Little Italy, Chinatown
10% Brooklyn Bridge
10% Times Square
10% Central Park

Rudenko claims the "fresh air" from New York "relieves stress, cures homesickness?and helps fighting nostalgia," though it "may contain traces of Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island."

In "Spaceballs," the 1987 comedy directed by Mel Brooks, Planet Spaceball wasted its air, and President Skroob--played by Brooks--is seen huffing bottles of Perri-Air.

But as Rundown.com pointed out, Rudenko may have been equally inspired by the Italian artist Piero Manzoni, who in 1961 sold 90 cans that purportedly contained his own feces. And Manzoni's "Merda d'artista" had similar labeling.

Hopefully Rudenko's cans smell better.

Below, the aforementioned "Spaceballs" scene.

Telemedicine Reshaping VA Healthcare, Natl Guard & Reserves ...

Front & Center: Military Talk Radio w/Rick Rogers

Show No. 74, Aug. 12, 2012

Listen to show here.

Guests this week:

James Rebholz, national chairman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Tape 12 min.

Drs. Steven Thorp and Martin Paulus on telemental health. The next big thing in treating veterans who live in outlying areas.

SEGMENT I:

Hello and welcome to Front & Center: Military Talk Radio.

A nice and very timely show is coming your way today.

On Wednesday I spent the day at San Diego Chapter for the National Defense Industrial Association expo. There I met James Rebholz, chairman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

It was good luck to run into Mr. Rebholz because just the week before the Army announced proposed changed the training requirements for the National Guard and Reserves.

I was able to get a quick interview with him on this and few other issues.

Then a really interesting segment that might offer a glimpse of what the future of health care will look like.

A San Diego VA doctor and researcher will discuss telemedicine. That?s where streaming video is used to treat patients, especially those in outlying areas who can?t easily get to a specialist.

So a great show is headed your way. Hope you can stay for the fastest hour in radio.

But if you can?t, Front & Center episodes are at: www.defensetracker.com.

Today?s show is episode is No. 74 in my never-ending quest to deliver you the best news and information on issues important to veterans, troops and military families. And let?s not forget defense contractors.

The Society of Professional Journalists recently named my website the best military blog so check out www.defensetracker.com and see what they are talking about.

* Starting in Southern California. Marines and sailors at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station welcomed a new commanding general.

Maj. Gen. (select) Steven W. Busby is the new 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing commander, taking over from Maj. Gen. Andrew W. O?Donnell, Jr.

Busby comes to San Diego from a staff job at the Pentagon.

O?Donnell is transferring to Yokota Air Base, Japan, to be the deputy commander for U.S. Forces Japan.

* More than 200 Camp Pendleton Marines and sailors are returning to Southern California this week after spending the last year at war in Afghanistan.

Regimental Combat Team 5 served as the ?command and control element? over the Marine battalions deployed to the Afghan districts of Garmser, Marjah, Nawa and Khan-Neshin.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome home.

* This week Camp Pendleton Sgt. Matthew Abbate was

posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary valor on Oct. 14, 2010 when his unit was ambushed by Taliban.

The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine died two months later, on Dec. 26, 2010, he killed by a series of IED explosions.

Music pause

* This is kind of a cool thing. Did you hear about what they are doing at Camp Pendleton? A chow hall there will soon have a drive-through window. How great is that?

This mess hall will be located near the airfield and is part of the base?s multibillion-dollar makeover.

Camp Pendleton has 15 mess halls for the more than 45,000 troops stationed at the base.

* This is not such a cool thing.

A U.S. Navy ship has collided with an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. This happened early this morning.

The Norfolk-based guided missile destroyer USS Porter bumped into a Japanese-owned oil tanker Otowasan in Strait of Hormuz.

No further details to report.

Saw some photos of this and there is a sizable hole mid-ship well above the waterline on the porter.

* Here is a story that really caught me by surprise the other day.

It said that Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer tried to kill himself in 2010, just a year before he became the first living Marine in 38 years to receive the nation?s highest valor award.

That is among several revelations in a new book written by Meyer and best-selling author Bing West.

The book is called ?Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War,? due to be published Sept. 25.

The book chronicles Meyer?s childhood in Kentucky, his time in the Marine Corps and the disastrous mission on Sept. 8, 2009, that saw Meyer and his team of American and Afghan troops ambushed, overrun and trapped for hours.

Meyer, 24, received the Medal of Honor from President Obama in September for braving enemy fire multiple times that day to recover the bodies of missing members of his team.

In an interview, Meyer said he decided to disclose the suicide attempt because it shows the realities of war. The close call occurred in September 2010, just days after the first anniversary of the battle in Afghanistan?s Kunar province.

He had been drinking at a friend?s house in Kentucky and on the way home pulled over and pulled out what he thought was a loaded pistol.

Meyer pulled the trigger and was shocked when it didn?t go off, he wrote in the book. He suspects someone else unloaded the pistol, but declined to disclose who it was. He subsequently sought treatment for post-traumatic stress and is doing better now, he said.

?That right there was rock bottom,? he said in the interview. ?I could never get lower than that, you know? And seeing how close it was that I was to take my own life, I think it?s something that a lot of veterans go through coming back and dealing with the realities of war.?

The book describes in detail the heavy combat he and others faced during the Battle of Ganjgal. Meyer recalls not only burning through thousands of machine-gun rounds while manning the turrets in several Humvees, but killing an enemy fighter in hand-to-hand combat.

For every soldier killed in war this year, about 25 veterans now take their own lives.

An astonishing 45 percent of those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries, in many cases psychological ones. It?s unclear how many are exaggerated or even fraudulent, but what is clear is this: the financial cost of these disabilities will be huge, yet it is dwarfed by the human cost.

* Things are heating up in the Middle East between Israel and its neighbors over a possible attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities.

Saudi Arabia warned it would intercept Israeli fighter jets that enter its airspace en route to an attack on Iran.

The warning was relayed via Washington and raised by top U.S. administration officials who recently visited Jerusalem.

* There?s a new law that limits how close demonstrators can come to funerals of military members.

The law expands the buffer zone around military funerals from 300 feet to 500 feet, and increases the buffer around access routes to a funeral service from 150 feet to 300 feet. It also creates harsher penalties for violators.

* From the this has got to end file.

Six Americans killed in on day by turncoat Afghanistan forces.

Two Afghan soldiers tried to gun down a group of NATO troops outside a military base in eastern Afghanistan. No international forces were killed, but one of the attackers was killed by NATO forces.

That was the second attack by Afghan forces on their international counterparts this week. Earlier two gunmen wearing Afghan army uniforms killed a U.S. soldier and wounded two others.

So far this year, 27 coalition service members have been killed in 20 green-on-blue attacks, according to an Associated Press tally. That compares with 11 fatal attacks and 20 deaths the previous year. In 2007 and 2008, there were a combined total of four attacks and four deaths.

Then on Friday, A man in an Afghan military uniform killed three U.S. troops in southern Afghanistan, the latest in a series of assaults against NATO soldiers by Afghans clad in security force garb.

The three troops killed were part of a Special Operations Forces mission meeting with local officials.

And yet again: A man in civilian clothing opened fire on a base shared with Afghan forces, killing three NATO troops, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force said Saturday.

The shooting occurred late Friday in Afghanistan?s volatile Helmand province, the same region where three American soldiers were killed hours earlier by a man in an Afghan military uniform, officials said.

Afghan and ISAF officials offered conflicting accounts over the latest shooting in Garmsir District, where U.S. Marines have been working with Afghan forces at a joint outpost.

An Afghan official said a local police officer opened fire, killing three Marines, while ISAF said the gunman was wearing civilian clothes.

* The Vietnam War ended nearly 40 years ago, but deadly legacy continues to snake through the population of that country.

Dioxin from the defoliant Agent Orange courses through the bodies of Vietnamese to this day.

The chemical linked to cancer, birth defects and other disabilities, has seeped into Vietnam?s soils and watersheds.

This week for the first time the U.S. will begin cleaning up Agent Orange that was stored at the former military base, now part of Danang?s airport.

The $43 million project begins as Vietnam and the United States forge closer ties to boost trade and counter China?s rising influence in the disputed South China Sea.

* The Social Security Administration is putting a rare lung disease found in some veterans exposed to burn pits and fires in Iraq and Afghanistan on its ?compassionate allowances? list, a designation that should speed the process to receive Social Security disability benefits for those diagnosed with

constrictive bronchiolitis.

* A Southern California-based charity is the latest charity to come under scrutiny for its financial practices.

The organization is ?Help Hospitalized Veterans? and it is no stranger to controversy. Four years ago its founder and then-president Roger Chapman was hauled brought before Congress to answer questions about his management of millions of dollars in private donations.

Well, now that same organization is in the news again for all the wrong reasons.

California?s Attorney General Kamala Harris is suing the Riverside County-based charity over alleged violations of state codes.

I?m going to try to get Charity Watch on the show next week to talk about the huge issue of organizations taking donations on behalf of veterans, troops and military families and then blowing the money on themselves.

* The U.S. military has its first openly gay flag officer with the promotion of Tammy Smith to the rank of Army brigadier general.

Smith serves as deputy chief at the Army Reserve office in Washington, D.C.

* Spent Wednesday at the San Diego Conference Center attending the National Defense Industrial Association expo.

A really strong turn out. I was told it was the biggest in years.

There I interviewed James Rebholz, chairman of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

We spoke about a story first brought up on the show last week. Big changes coming for the peacetime operations of the Guard and Reserves.

Those citizen-soldiers who thought that a return to the old construct of one weekend a month and two weeks a year after the fighting overseas ends in 2012 are in for a shock.

The end of the fighting will NOT mean a return to a peacetime schedule that 550,000 Guardsmen and Reservists once knew.

For some their yearly obligation will grow from two weeks to seven weeks a year.

There is also talk of reducing their pay for weekend duty.

But this might also be a way of thinning the ranks so the government doesn?t have to pay retirements. Just make it too bothersome for folks to stay in.

I predict employers will not be happy and that the number of part-time troops filing Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act violations will rise.

The Morning Report was sponsored by the law offices of Haytham Farj. For more information, give him a call at 619-752-3950.

Time for a quick break, but stay tuned. Coming up an interview with James Rebholz, chairman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is coming up on the side of the break.

Segment II

Taped interview with James Rebholz. 12 minutes

*** That was an interview I did on Wednesday. So, Jim Rebholz, chair of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve does not believe that any changes to the training calendar of our citizen soldiers is going to meet with push back from employers. I hope he is right about that.

I however, have my doubts. I?ll keep my eye on this and let you know how this all pans out.

Well up next very special and important interviews with that might just give you a glimpse of how medicine will be practiced in the future.

Not so many years ago the idea of a doctor being in one place while seeing patients in another seemed fantastic.

But that was before Internet broadband and ?streaming video gave birth to telemedicine.

This cross-pollination of telecommunication and information technology could revolutionize care delivery, especially for those living in rural areas.

In some ways telemedicine is tailor made for the Department of Veterans Affairs because often VA facilities are centrally located while their patients are dispersed.

Overcoming the tyranny of geography is the goal of the San Diego VA Healthcare System?s tele-mental health program.

Joining me to talk about the VA?s pilot tele-mental health program being developed in San Diego and Imperial counties are Steven Thorp and Martin Paulus.

Steven Thorp is Program Director of PTSD Clinical Team at the San Diego VA. He also teaches at University of California, San Diego.

Martin Paulus is a psychiatrist at the University of California San Diego and the Veterans Affairs Health Care System San Diego.

Gentlemen, welcome to you both.

* Let?s start with you Steven Thorp. Give our audience a thumbnail of the telemental health program.

* In background information on the program the ?great and growing need? for effective mental health treatment for veterans was cited. What are the specifics of that?

* Martin Paulus, what does the early reports say about the quality of care that vets are getting through telemental health?

* Where is this work done? How secure are the links?

* How expansively is this used? Do vets seem to like it?

* Who seems to be the biggest users of telemental health?

* Steven Thorp, this program goes well beyond San Diego and Imperial counties. Tell me about that. What ultimately would the VA like to do with telemedicine in general?

* Martin Paulus, what types of treatments are provided via the Internet? Can these patients also see someone in person?

* Post Traumatic Stress is a key ailment that telemental health program is treating. How receptive are the veterans?

(Number of patients that dropped out of treatment was higher for IP (29%) as compared to TMH (6%))

* I know that at one time there was a waitlist for telemental health. Does that still exist?

* What are the reasons for their acceptance for this program?

* Is this still a randomized program? If it still is, when can vets opt for tele-appointments?

* How many people in the program? Where are your clients?

(Nonetheless, therapists conducting evidence based psychotherapy using TMH have completed over 3,000 therapy hours. 10 offices with TMH)

This Spring the VA San Diego Healthcare System was selected to start a new mental health program to provide mental health services via Internet link to Veterans across the Western United States who live long distances from their nearest VA treatment facilities.

Opened in April, the Telemental Health Center uses a secure Internet connection and web camera to connect Veteran patients who would otherwise be unable to get psychotherapy treatment due to geographical constraints.

Rather than traveling long distances for treatment for issues such as post-traumatic stress (PTS), patients can now connect with their therapist via webcam through the convenience of their local regional Vet center or VA outpatient clinic.

?The regional center is a place to provide evidence-based psychotherapy along with infrastructure for participating community-based outpatient clinics and staff,? said Dr. Martin Paulus, Western regional director of telemental health. ?This is the future of mental health care in the 21st century.?

At its full capacity, the Telemental Health Center will treat up to 85 patients a week from areas as far away as Alaska and Guam. According to Paulus, this will save time for patients who normally would travel long distances to their regional VA medical center for care. Providing state-of-the-art psychotherapies to rural patients using the Telemental Health program will also allow staff to offer more appointments and allow more time to treat a greater number of serious mental health cases.

VA San Diego is one of three regional locations selected for Veterans Affairs telemental health centers across the United States. The others are in Charleston, S.C. and San Antonio, Texas.

News Corp launches MundoFox network nationwide

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? News Corp. has launched its new Spanish-language TV network on 50 stations, marking a challenge to leaders Univision and Telemundo in the fight for Hispanic audiences in the U.S.

The MundoFox network launched Monday on stations such as KWHY-TV in Los Angeles and WPXO-LD in New York, covering some 11 million Hispanic households.

Network spokeswoman Carolyn Berg says MundoFox achieved its goal of being available in three-quarters of Hispanic households in the U.S.

The network is a 50-50 partnership between News Corp.'s Fox International Channels and RCN Television Group, a TV show producer based in Colombia. Over the next few years, RCN's programming will be available exclusively on MundoFox as its agreements with other networks expire.

RCN shows such as "El Capo" and "Kdabra" are set to air right away.

Wildlife Conservation Society Endorses Reponsible Energy ...

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) came out in support of U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar's proposed plan for energy development in Arctic Alaska. By protecting extensive coastal plain habitat around Teshekpuk Lake, and the foothills around the Utukok uplands, the most important Arctic wetlands and migratory corridor for caribou and migratory birds would be conserved.

A final management plan for the NPR-A may be issued by the secretary after a 30-day review but ?the WCS lauds the proposal because it balances conservation, subsistence rights for Alaska Natives, and energy extraction.

?Our conservation science has consistently shown that wildlife in the NPR-A are best served by a development approach that balances wildlife protection and responsible oil and gas leasing. Western Arctic Alaska is arguably the most important region for wildlife in all the Arctic, which is why we consider today?s announcement by Secretary Salazar an important step in the right direction," said?Dr. Cristi?n Samper, WCS President and CEO. "Critical habitat exists within the NPR-A for several species of wildlife, including nesting grounds for millions of migratory birds and calving grounds for two of Alaska?s largest and most important caribou herds. By protecting these existing areas from future development, a balance can be achieved and wildlife conservation secured.

?"By keeping development and disturbance away from essential wildlife habitat, Arctic wildlife will continue to thrive. WCS studies have shown that human activities associated with development, such as the oilfields in Prudhoe Bay, negatively affect populations of nesting birds by attracting predators such as foxes, ravens and gulls. The Arctic wetlands surrounding Teshekpuk Lake, the Utukok River Uplands, Kasegaluk Lagoon and other areas are the largest in the world and are internationally important for massive numbers of migratory birds, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and loon. The plan announced today will help conserve these birds and assures caribou protection across much of their migration and into their calving grounds. Many other Arctic species, including polar bear, snowy owl, and gyrfalcon, will further benefit from this plan.??
