Benefits Of Bike Riding For Adults : Sports and Recreation

You are here: Home / Cycling / Benefits Of Bike Riding For Adults

Perhaps, you have already heard of the different benefits of bike riding from the aficionados themselves or health and fitness experts. The good thing about this activity is that it can be enjoyed through many options. For example, you can ride to different places alone or in a group especially if you are a beginner. In the name of adventure, you can try the rocky hills. But if being safe is what you want, drive along even inside streets, aside from reading and remembering other biking tips today.

Using your bike to commute improves not only your physical condition but also the status of your finances. You can save a lot of money with your short and long rides all together. Additionally, letting the wind blow your face as you pedal your way to work allows you to loosen up and free your mind of the day?s worries. Following are the healthy benefits of bike riding one should not miss.

Efficient Cardiovascular System. This happens when the heart works at its best; sending blood to all parts of the body. Most of the time people think they can only experience this through aerobic exercises and practicing other bike safety tips. As long as your heart functions well, it is free from the dangers of coronary diseases.

Muscle Build-Up. Cycling gives your muscles the much-needed boost that allows them to carry out tougher tasks. Continuous pedaling and balancing on a bike strengthen the muscles in your buttocks, calves hips and thighs. This is achieved without damaging joints as it is a low-impact exercise in comparison to the likes of running. With that, the sensitive cartilages in your body are preserved. Cycling also gives a perfect opportunity to work out for those who are prone to muscle strain and injuries concerning the back, feet, hips and knees. And that is regardless of the types of bike they use.

Fats Dissolved. Ever had thin arms and legs after dieting? And yet you have bulging stomach. That is normal. Stubborn fats reside in our stomachs. It takes years for these fats to build up in that area and so it takes much time and effort as well to rid of them. The tummy trimming effects of cycling can be lined with the benefits of doing burpees, crunches and push ups.

Improvement Of Coordination Skills. Needless to say, cycling requires the effort of both feet, both hands, your body and your brain. As you traverse different places, the brain will tell you what needs to be done and your body balances itself according to it.

Better Immune System And Mental Health. As you get to exercise your whole body through cycling, your immune system is strengthened and become less prone to carcinogens. Proven as a great way to enjoy, cycling also frees the mind from anxieties and stress ? the culprit of depression and other mental illnesses.

Longer Lifespan. Since your whole body and mind are set to work in a harmonious manner, cycling boosts positive emotions for each of the riders. It is believed that people who are happy get to live longer than sober ones.

To ensure the health benefits of bike riding, take wise precautions whenever you go out. Put on safety gears to avoid injuries in case of mishaps.

Hunt for superbugs in Australian animals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? University of Adelaide scientists will lead a national research effort to hunt for so-called 'superbugs' in Australian livestock and pets.

The University's School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, based at the Roseworthy Campus, has received $110,000 in funding from Pfizer Animal Health Australia to conduct a pilot study, which is the first of its kind for the nation.

Scientists in the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Roseworthy will research the prevalence of resistance to all major classes of antibiotic for two key groups of pathogens, Escherichia coli and staphylococci, in livestock animals and pets.

"Australia currently has no coordinated national program monitoring antibiotic resistance in livestock or companion animal pathogens," says the Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Dr Darren Trott.

"Resistance in these key pathogens is a major driver throughout the world of the use of antimicrobial drugs for livestock and companion animals."

Dr Trott says Australia has some of the world's most conservative restrictions regarding the use of antimicrobial drugs in livestock.

"Australian producers do not use broad-spectrum antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones or gentamicin in livestock production, and usage of the antibiotic ceftiofur is governed by strict label requirements. However, our country is increasingly importing fresh food from countries where these antimicrobial drugs are used indiscriminately in both animals and humans.

"Australia's primary producers are under great pressure, having to compete with cheap imported products that are often of inferior quality," he says.

Dr Trott says the new study hopes to provide a clearer picture of the state of Australian livestock in particular.

"We're currently establishing a network of university-based, private and government veterinary microbiology laboratories throughout Australia that can supply us with the bacteria isolated from animal infections. These will give us a good indication of how prevalent antibiotic resistance is in our animal populations.

"We expect our study will confirm that Australia has low rates of resistance to important classes of drug in these key animal pathogens, relative to other countries, which will be good news for our exporters," he says.

"If we identify any hot pockets of emerging resistance, mitigation strategies can be implemented quickly.

"Over the next few years, we hope our data will positively influence the prescribing practices of veterinarians in the field, whether they are involved in livestock, companion animals, or both. Pfizer Australia has shown leadership in commencing the program and establishing the network. Further government research funding would be required to keep the surveillance ongoing," Dr Trott says.

A new trailer has been posted on the ?Halo Waypoint? site for the Season 1 of the?Spartan Ops mode. The trailer showcases gameplay sequences and some incredibly high quality Computer Graphics segments, making it really hard to believe this can be done on current consoles.

Spartan Ops is the cooperative Mode for Halo 4, replacing Fireflight mode from Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST: it won?t be completely separate from the rest of the game since it ties into the Spartan IV program and the main campaign, taking place 6 months after the events of the main Halo 4 story; up to 4 players will be able to join in the action.

The Spartan Ops will revolve around the Majestic Squad, also present in the main game interacting with the Chief. Confirmed enemies in this mode are the Remaining Covenant and Prometheans.

The Spartan Ops campaign will be included for free in the game. Seasons will be made up of five missions long Chapters, released weekly. It is yet unkown how many seasons are going to be released and if they all will be free since 343 Industries, Halo 4 developers, ?has only talked about Season 1.

You can watch the new trailer here and get even more hyped as the release date of Halo 4 draws near: on November 6 Master Chief is coming back!

More knockouts mean huge cuts on 'The Voice'

By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

NBC

Chevonne and De'Borah face off in the knockout rounds on "The Voice."

And the knockout rounds are already over, folks! On Monday night, fans of "The Voice" watched as coaches Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green eliminated half of their teams, whittling them down to just five contestants who will compete in the live rounds. Tuesday night, it was Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton's turn to make the tough decisions.

So which artists made it through to the live shows?

See which contestants Adam and Cee Lo sent through to the live shows during Monday night's episode

Team Christina

The first two to face off were Devyn DeLoera and Laura Vivas. "I want to see who can deliver a powerful performance under pressure," Christina says of the pairing. Devyn decides to take on a doozy of a song: Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," while Laura takes on Marc Anthony's "I Need to Know" and shows versatility by singing half the song in Spanish. In the end, Devyn's ambitious song choice won Christina over and she was sent through to the live shows.

Next, Christina pairs Adriana Louise against 16-year-old Celica Westbrook because they are "both powerful pop singers." Adrianna chooses "Already Gone" by Kelly Clarkson to show off her "emotion" and Celica goes with Justin Bieber 's "Never Say Never" because he's in her age range. Christina sends Adrianna through and tells a heartbroken Celica, "Don't hate me!"

Because of their "two different styles," Alessandra Guercio and Dez Duron are pitted against each other. Alessandra takes on Rihanna's "Take a Bow," while the former football star Dez decides to tackle Lionel Richie's "Stuck on You." Christina praises Alessandra's raspy tone and Dez's runs, but chooses to keep Dez on her team. (The ladies in the crowd seem very happy with her choice.)

Christina decides to go for a "fun" matchup by pairing Chevonne and De'Borah together. Chevonne chooses "Dancing With Myself" to celebrate how far she's come in the competition, while De'Borah picks "You Found Me" by The Fray because she can really relate to the song. Christina sends De'Borah through to the live shows. "I love Christina so much. I'm grateful that she chose me," De'Borah says. Chevonne ignores Cee Lo's numerous "byes"

Aquile and Sylvia Yacoub are Christina's final two performers of the knockout rounds, with Aquile choosing "Grenade" and Sylvia decides to choose one of her coach's most popular tunes "Fighter." "That's hard to do," Christina tells her during rehearsals. In the end, Christina keeps Sylvia, which completes her team for the live rounds. "I've got five amazing people on my team and they're going to rock," Christina says.

(Sidenote: How hilarious was Adam's Randy Jackson joke during Cee Lo's critique of their performances? "Who's Randy Jackson?" Blake asks and Cee Lo jokes that he's "Michael Jackson's brother." LOL.)

How Sandy is messing with TV

Team Blake

For his first battle of the night, Blake pairs Gracia Harrison and Liz Davis as they are both country singers and he doesn't want to "split the vote" once the show gets to the live rounds. Gracia chooses "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith to show her versatility and Liz picks one of Blake's wife Miranda Lambert's biggest hits "Gunpowder and Lead" because it's a lot like her personality (aka "edgy"). Blake was "confused" by Gracia's song choice, so he goes with Liz as the winner.

Rudy Parris and Terry McDermott are the next two contestants to face off as they are both rockers and Blake is looking for a well-rounded team filled with artists from different genres. Rudy goes with Chris Brown's "Forever," which Blake cautions might be too young for the grandfather. Terry goes with a song he covered with his band a lot: "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney. All three coaches prefer Terry and Blake agrees, saying the Scottish rocker knows exactly the artist he wants to be and sends him through to the live shows.

"X Factor's" David Correy finds his birth mother

The country crooner pairs former Team Adam member Colin McLoughlin with 16-year-old Michaela Paige because "they both have great command of their tone and pitch." Colin picks "Breakeven" by The Script, while Michaela channels her inner-rocker with "Love Is a Battlefield." "It comes down to what I'm into the most," Blake says after their performances before going with Michaela. "I love this little girl so much," he explains.

Julio Cesar Castillo, who sings Bieber's "Somebody to Love," is pitted against 15-year-old MarissaAnn, who decides to tackle "Lady Marmalade," which features her former coach Christina. While both performances left us underwhelmed, Blake praises both singers, but goes with Julio as the winner.

In the final knockout battle, Suzanna Choffel takes on former Hey Monday lead singer Cassadee Pope. Cassadee decides to sing "Payphone," one of Adam's band Maroon 5's songs, because it's the perfect range for her and she loves the song. Suzanna takes a risk and picks Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved." Adam is impressed by Cassadee's take on his hit song and Blake is also impressed, citing Suzanne's "song choice" as her undoing. "I really think we have the most diverse team," Blake says. "I really think I could win this thing again, I do."

What did you think of night two of the knockout rounds? Did the coaches make the right calls? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

11 Tips for ?Tapping Into? Healing for Kids and Teens | Make The Lists

people - happy

EFT Tapping is a positive and unique form of therapy that can be used on your child or teen who suffers from anxiety or emotional problems. These types of concerns are fairly common at this juncture in life and could affect one out of every eight kids. If gone unchecked, these issues can cause difficulty in their family life, with their friends, and at school. The tapping method is quick and easy to master and can help them to overcome physical and emotional issues. The following is some helpful information on how to heal your kids and teens through the tapping method.

What is EFT Tapping?

Watching your child or teen suffer and go through emotional distress can be overwhelming and painful to you, the parent. Emotional and behavioral issues are typically caused by an anxiety, danger or some kind of threat they may be experiencing in life, and it can make children unable to function logically. Tapping works along the same lines as acupuncture but without the use of painful needles. The theory behind?emotional freedom techniques?is based on getting rid of the negative emotions that are in the body and replaces them with positive energy in a matter of minutes.

How Does Tapping Work?

The child or teen can begin by assessing the issue and summarizing the problem at hand. It then gets ranked a level of intensity and how serious the issue seems to them. Before the tapping process begins, positive affirmations are discussed. As the affirmation is being said out loud, the light finger tapping can begin. The various meridian points consist of the inner eyebrow, on the side of the eye, underneath the eye, nose, chin, collarbone and head. As the areas are tapped, positive energy is released and takes over the negative thoughts and feelings.

Eleven Ways EFT Tapping Can Help Your Child or Teen

There is no limit to the variety of problems that EFT tapping can help combat. This form of therapy can be used on children, teens and adults that suffer from:

  • Anxiety over starting a new school
  • A child or teen that is being bullied
  • Being afraid to talk in public
  • Overcoming physical and mental challenges

EFT for Teens and Children

When a problem begins to interfere with the daily life of your child or teen, it is your responsibility as her parent to help her find a resolution to cope with and work through these problems. The EFT tapping technique is simple to learn, and your child can teach herself to do it on her own when she is experiencing a difficult situation or anxious thoughts and feelings in everyday life. Parents can also master this skill and tap along with the child. The EFT method has been known to be a long lasting technique that conquers the issue permanently. It also works better than alternative forms of therapy like hypnosis or medication.

This technique is a positive tool to help children and teens learn to overcome common fears, anxieties, worries and serious traumas. The EFT tapping method can also help them build self-esteem by providing them with a safe outlet to get rid of the negative energy. Building on inner passion is the best way to start a research project, according to Dave Marker, chairman of a judging panel for the Intel Science Talent Search. Theoretical projects exemplify these. Such projects are abstract, meaning that they use mathematics to understand the relationships between objects. Most of these projects investigate the physical world using known properties of chemistry (how molecules react with one another) and physics (how energy and matter interact). Here we focus on the pursuits of some teens who found a passion in such theoretical research.

Brink's Co shares tumble, 3Q profit falls 56 pct

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Shares of The Brink's Co. fell Thursday after the armored car company said its third-quarter net income plunged 56 percent, as revenue and operating earnings from its international business sank.

The Richmond, Va., company said total earnings fell to $13.5 million, or 28 cents per share, from $30.8 million, or 64 cents per share, in last year's quarter. Adjusted earnings were 50 cents per share, excluding severance costs and retirement plan expenses among other items.

Revenue slipped 2 percent to $979 million.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, earnings of 61 cents per share on $1.01 billion in revenue.

The price of company shares dropped 6.6 percent, or $1.81, to close at $25.57 while broader trading indexes advanced slightly.

Brink's said operating earnings from its international business fell 17 percent to $51 million, while revenue from that business dropped about 2 percent to $744 million. In particular, the company recorded a $4 million government receivable write off in Argentina.

Brink's officials said in a statement that lower results in Latin America countered higher earnings in Europe and North America.

The company's selling, general and administrative expenses also climbed 8 percent to $147.4 million.

Brinks said it still expects revenue for the year to rise 5 percent to 8 percent, implying a range of $4.08 billion to $4.2 billion. Wall Street is expecting revenue of $3.96 billion on average, with estimates ranging from $3.92 billion to $3.99 billion.

The Crime of Teaching - Iran Press Watch

I never met her, however, the picture her sister draws of her makes me feel I have known her for ages. In all the photos I have seen of her, she wears an innocent smile. A smile now captive in a prison cell in Evin. Nooshin was teaching a group of young students who according to ?The law? are not permitted to seek higher education in Iran and because of this crime she is in prison today.

Nooshin was once one of those youth, herself, who were denied education in that country. In order to overcome this obstacle and to get what is the right of every human, she connected with the University of Indiana in the United States and studied by correspondence. She later sought a specialty in her field of education in a Canadian Institution and earned a graduate degree.

Nasrin Khadem, Nooshin?s older sister who had followed a similar path in obtaining her higher education, speaks of Nooshin:

?She is sincere and friendly; as soon as you meet her she puts you at ease and you feel you have been her friend for years. She befriends and earns people?s trust easily. She is selfless to the point that despite being presently incarcerated in a prison cell, she is concerned about me and our father and asks us not to worry about her.?

Nasrin, who currently lives in Vancouver, and according to her own words ?loves to study?, was officially ?cleansed?, in other words expelled, from the university during the cultural revolution of Iran in (1979). Nasrin says that in order to be allowed registration in a university, one has to belong to one of its four major religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism or Zoroastrianism; rendering it impossible for a Bahai to enroll in a university.

Nooshin and Nasrin are both Baha?is, and due to this ?crime? they were both denied higher education in Iran. Hence, they chose to continue their studies through correspondence courses offered at Indiana University in the United States.

Due to the inherent complexity associated with studying by correspondence it took a longer period of time and was much harder to complete, but they did not give up. Upon obtaining their degrees, they were both accepted for post graduate studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. After completing her post-graduate degree in 2003, Nooshin returned to Iran. Nasrin said she did this because she wanted to serve her country.

She recalls the days at Carleton University, saying: ? they used to mistake me for my sister?

I asked her, why doesn?t Iran allow Bahais to seek higher education? Nasrin responds:? I don?t know; one should put the question to the government of Iran. However, the reason could be that they don?t want Bahais to be armed with higher education which may allow them to advance in leadership positions within the country and possibly influence the society

In response to the question of why higher education is important to her, she says:? I believe education is essential for one?s existence and growth. It serves as a ladder that leads to higher levels. By attaining higher education, one becomes equipped to serve oneself as well as others.

Not only was Nooshin eager to acquire higher levels of knowledge, but she also encouraged me to obtain my PhD. It was our Mother?s wish as well for us to continue on to graduate studies.?

The Bahai community faces this enormous obstacle, created by the government of Iran, with a positive attitude. It responded by creating an organization called the Bahai Institute for Higher Education (BIHE).

Dr. Behrooz Sabet, a founding member and professor at this institute lives in the USA. In reference to this matter he says:? The policy makers in Iran, mistakenly assumed that by exerting such pressure and by imposing such limitations, the Bahai youth would ultimately suffer from inner conflict and loss of identity. In other words they presented the Bahai youth with two options: ?either be denied access to university or turn your back on your faith and community?. The Bahai community could not remain neutral in the face of such harsh threats. The future of an entire generation was at stake. It was in an attempt to fill the void created by these harsh measures that they resorted to the creation of the BIHE.

I asked Nasrin, why she and Nooshin decided to collaborate with this institute?

She said: ?The youth who study in this university are denied education in our country only and only because of being Bahai. Despite the difficult conditions and limited means, these students strive to continue their education and it is our honor to assist them.?

I enquired about the latest news from Nooshin; the young woman who after obtaining her graduate degree from the university of? Ottawa, decided to leave the comfort of her life in Canada and set off to serve the youth of her country. Nasrin said: ?My sister is presently in section 209 of Evin Prison. As far as I know, she has made friends with the inmates as well as some of the guards. In the telephone conversations with us, Nooshin consoles and invites us to have patience. She repeatedly asks us not to worry about her. She has a court hearing on the 26th of September, 2011.? Reminiscing on their time together, Nasrin says: ?we used to take the same courses and enroll in the same exams. I once recall Nooshin fell ill just before an exam; she cancelled it and so did I. We were and still are, very close to one another. Not a day goes by that I don?t think of her? I miss her very much.

Bahais are a group who have been and continue to be subject to boundless discrimination. One such aggression against the believers of this faith is to deny their youth access to academic knowledge. To which the Bahais have reacted by creating a miracle. From the midst of the rubble resulting of this human rights abuse, a university has peered its head out which has produced thousands of students and hundreds of highly capable specialists. This success is that much more significant because the students who attend the university are not located in a specific place, rather they are dispersed, studying underground and surmounting numerous difficulties. Dr. Sabet, who teaches at this university by correspondence said: ?History has shown that efforts to extinguish a belief contrary to the belief of the aggressor results in the expansion of that belief and any effort exerted towards a cultural advancement can never be destroyed. ? In an interview with HafteH he added: ? The Bahai community of Iran believes that education is a fundamental human right as stipulated in the charter of human rights, to which Iran is a signatory. Thus all efforts towards the cultural advancement of a group cannot be halted. ?

Our interview with Dr. Sabet ended with the following: ?This institute is uniquely scientific and academic and completely apolitical.? In addition it has no religious connotations and the courses are purely established on scientific facts. Its main goal is to educate a generation and arm them with knowledge to serve their country of Iran. Despite the current conditions, I remain quit optimistic about the future of this Institute.?

Below is the full interview of HafteH with Dr. Behrooz Sabet.

HafteH interview with the Prof. Behrooz Sabet, One of the founders of BIHE,

A university whose success is a miracle

Question:

The Bahai community in Iran has developed an educational system which is active and from which many students have graduated. Why is this insue necessary?

Answer:

Since establishing power in Iran, the Islamic government has been systematically fighting the Bahai community and its beliefs. It has set out to create fear, insecurity and helplessness for the Bahais by expelling its followers from universities and all professional positions. The goal of such policy was to prevent the Bahai youth from obtaining higher education thereby denying them the chance of progress, diminishing their chances of finding work, and eventually demoralizing them into loosing hope in a better future. They had hoped that these tactics would create inner conflict in the youth and drive them away from their community and their parents. In other words, they gave two choices to the Bahai youth: give up your education and progress, or abandon the Bahai Faith and the Baha?i community. The Baha?i community could not stay idle in the face of these threats; the future of its youth was at stake. The community responded by creating BIHE, an apolitical education facility. The creation of this institution as a response is in itself also noteworthy. The usual reaction of a persecuted community is anger, demonstrations, retreating into one?s own shell, internal chaos, and other forms of combat such as not cooperating with the political and economic establishments.

Question:

Are you aware of a similar movement in other countries or societies?

Answer:

In my personal and limited research, I have not found anything similar to these circumstances. The only exception that comes to mind is that of Poland during the Second World War where the Jewish population was persecuted and not allowed access to education. The Jewish professors resorted to teaching students in their homes and apartments.*

Question:

How has the government of Iran reacted to BIHE?

Answer:

In the brief history since its inception, BIHE has been subjected to attacks by government security forces several times. In these attacks, professors and students have been arrested and some jailed. The security forces would invade the homes where classes were held and confiscate books, computers and whatever pertained to education. But the most recent attack took place on the 22 May 2011, which resulted in the arrest of some professors and persons responsible for running this institution. This act was carefully premeditated by the government, aiming to break the spirit of the active members of the Bahai community.

Question:

What is the history of the development of this institution?

Answer:

In 1987 a group of Bahai professors and others who had been fired from their jobs, got together and in a non-official and voluntary way, started classes in their homes. With time these activities expanded and more courses were introduced. More Bahai as well as non-Bahai instructors from within and outside of Iran also provided their assistance. Thanks to the progress in communication technology and the availability of the Internet, on-line courses were introduced. From the outset, all professors and instructors involved, tried their utmost to preserve the academic standards for both accepting the students and as well as respecting rules and regulations that pertain to other universities in Iran. As the institution developed, efforts were made not only to add new courses but also to continually improve the quality of the teaching. Certain guiding principles are adhered to within this institution. These can be listed as follows:

a) Education that would help students get into the work force;

b) Education that is beneficial to the Iranian society and it basic needs;

c) Education that has a good balance between theory and practice;

d) Education that promotes service to humanity;

e) Education that teaches critical thinking to facilitate the solving of problems in society;

f) Education that enables the students to specialize but also to be aware of the dangers of over-specialization.

Thus obligatory courses were made part of the core curriculum. The purpose of this was to instill general knowledge and insight before leading to specialization. These courses address classical philosophy and literature and the history of Eastern and Western civilization. It is mandatory for all students to study world history, the history of science, the appreciation of art, the philosophy of moral , sociology and psychology.

Question:

What are the programs offered by the university?

Answer:

The programs offered are: accounting, chemistry, biology, construction engineering, business, civil engineering, computer engineering, English literature, Persian literature, law, mathematics, psychology, pharmacy and sociology. At graduate levels, the university offers business management, education (curriculum development), public health, engineering and sociology.

Question:

What is your role in the institution?

Answer:

I am a professor and advisor.

Question:

Is this university recognized internationally?

Answer:

Although this institution has not been able to get official recognition as of yet, thanks to the hard work of its students, it has secured the trust and recognition of many universities in Europe, North America, India and Australia.

Question:

How many students have graduated thus far?

Answer:

Nearly two thousand have graduated.

Question:

Is it possible to continue to the graduate level and if so, how?

Answer:

Thus far, close to 200 individuals have succeeded in continuing their education at the Masters and Ph.D. levels in high ranking universities. And a noticeable number of these individuals have honored their commitment to return to Iran after completing their studies in order to educate the youth who are deprived of obtaining a university education.

Question:

What is the demographic profile of students in respect to age and gender?

Answer:

I do not have the exact statistics, however, the majority of students are between the ages of 18 and 22, and the number of female students exceeds that of their male counterpart.

Question:

Is there a tuition fee for the BIHE student?

Answer:

The students pay a nominal tuition fee.

Question:

What has been the reaction of the government and the security officials of Iran to your university, and how has this reaction changed over the past 20 years?

Answer:

As previously stated, the reaction of the security officials to this institution has been confrontational with the goal of eliminating the institution and creating depression and hopelessness amongst its students. It has to be said, that during the reforms and presidency of Mr. Khatami, the level of pressure and aggression fluctuated. At times there was relative calm, and then they resumed their offensive and confiscation of materials. Notably in the years 1998, 2001 and 2002 a number of individuals were arrested and imprisoned. Computers and educational materials were confiscated and classes were sealed shut.

Question:

How do you view the future of his Institute?

Answer:

In my opinion this institution has a bright future, not because it is a Bahai institution but because it was established as a response to cruelty and oppression, and because its aim is to educate Iranian youth.

Thank you Dr. Behrooz Sabet.

* [Note: during German occupation in Poland no one was allowed to study. High schools had been closed and many teachers were organizing underground classes. The best example which could be inspirational for BIHE students is the story of Marie Slodowska-Curie, who started her study at the clandestine ?Floating University? in Warsaw then continued her graduate studies at the University of Paris, France. She became known for her scientific accomplishments, including two Nobel prizes. [ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie]

This conversation took place by e-mail on the 23 September, 2011 between Dr. Behrooz Sabet and Khosro Shamiranie for the purpose of publishing an article in Montreal weekly, HafteH.

Saving Up For Your College Tuition

Earning a college degree is an important way for a person to begin to make progress in their career that will lead to better opportunities and higher salaries. However, paying for college can often be a challenge for students who want to complete their education without falling further into debt. Fortunately, there are many ways for a student to begin to save up for their college tuition so that they can make smart financial decisions throughout their education.

Start a Savings Account

It sounds so obvious at first, yet many people fail to open an account that is designated specifically for putting money toward their education. By having a special education savings account, a person will be more likely to keep their focus regarding saving money. Additionally, students who are working towards earning a bachelor of commerce degree will find that managing their own account will help them with understanding the information that they learn in class.

Plan a Budget

In order to save money, it will be necessary to stick to a budget when shopping. Many times, a person will be surprised to discover how many ways they waste money every day. For example, a person can save money on gas by walking to nearby stores and events. Additionally, buying a new item of clothing every week or eating out may not always be necessary. When planning a budget, it is important to plan for a few special treats or purchases. However, the majority of the money that is spent should go to necessities so that the money that is saved can be placed into the savings account.

Stash Extra Cash

Many times, money comes from unexpected places. Birthdays, holidays and even winning a special contest can lead to a person suddenly having money that they were not expecting to receive. While it can be tempting to go out and spend the money on a luxury item, this money should be put towards savings so that it can continue to grow.

Saving up for college tuition does not mean that a person has to feel as if they are missing out. By starting an account that will help them to stay focused, students earning a bachelor of business degree can begin to save by eliminating unnecessary purchases and stashing away any extra money that they earn or save. This way, they will be able to begin their new careers post-graduation with a strong financial standing.

Angel Investors Do Make Money, Data Shows 2.5x Returns Overall

Robert WiltbankEditor?s note: Robert Wiltbank, PhD, is a professor at Willamette University in Portland, Ore. He is co-author of Effectual Entrepreneurship?and of The Catalyst, as well as many academic articles in the fields of entrepreneurship and strategy. I began studying angel investing returns about 10 years ago as a result of a problem I couldn?t resolve. Over these years I?ve compiled the largest data set on angel investor financial returns that exists, through research backed by the Kauffman Foundation, NESTA (a UK-based entrepreneurship foundation), the University of Washington, and Willamette University. The best estimate of overall angel investor returns from this data is 2.5 times their investment, though in any one investment the odds of a positive return are less than 50 percent. This is absolutely competitive with venture capital returns.

There is an important legal distinction from a gift along with a loan. A really generous relative or even buddy may offer you $5000 for auto repairs, for instance. When there is no expectation associated with payment, the money may very well be a gift. The actual giver couldn't take legal action against regarding repayment later inside a civil match. But when the credit supplier designates the cash just like a bank loan as well as the customer will pay back even a buck, the money can be viewed a legitimate bank loan as well as the loan company can demand payment anytime. Ambir ImageScan Pro 940u

Almost identical in most ways to the Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u ($695 direct, 3.5 stars), the Ambir ImageScan Pro 940u ($895 direct) offers one key difference for the higher price: It scans faster in color. The two scanners offer all the same features otherwise, including the same speed for grayscale and black and white scans, and both can serve well for heavy-duty personal or small-office use.

Except for the name on the front panel, the 940u and Ambir 930u are twins, with the same small size that won't take up much room on your desk, the same 100-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), and the same ability to scan in duplex (both sides of the page at once). They also share the same software, with an emphasis on document management and optical character recognition (OCR).

One of the nicer touches in both also is their ultrasonic detection for misfeeds, so you won't skip a page in your scanned document if there's a double feed. The scanner simply stops when it detects a double feed, and it gives you a warning to remove the pages and feed them again.

Setup and Scanning
Setting up the 940u is absolutely typical for a desktop scanner. You simply attach the paper input tray, connect a USB cable, and run the installation program. Not surprisingly, the scanner comes with the same set of software as the Ambir 930u, namely: a scan utility, a document management program (Newsoft Presto! PageManager 9.21 Standard), an OCR program (Abbyy FineReader 9.0 Sprint), and both Twain and WIA drivers so you can scan directly from FineReader, PageManager, and most other Windows programs with a scan command.

For my tests, I used the scan utility, which lets you define up to nine scan profiles, with settings for color mode, resolution, the format to save the file in, and more. You can then scan by choosing the appropriate preset from the scanner front panel or from a list you can bring up on your computer. You can also go back to the profiles easily to modify them as needed, changing the resolution, for example, before you scan.

The one shortcoming for the utility is that you have to pick a preset strictly by number, 1 through 9. That's all there's room for in the one-character LED on the front panel, and it's all that shows even in the list you can bring up on your computer screen.

As I've pointed out in reviews of other scanners with similar utilities, it would be a lot easier to pick the right preset if you could add a text reminder to each one. To do that on the scanner front panel, you'd first have to modify the hardware to add a multi-character display, which might add extra cost. But there's no good excuse for not letting you add some text to the window that shows on your computer screen.

As it is, unless you're good at remembering arbitrary number assignments, you'll either need a cheat sheet to tell you which number goes with which scan profile, or you'll need to do what I did, which is look at the definitions window before each scan to see which number you want, and then close the window and give a scan command.

Performance and Other Issues
Ambir rates the 940u at 40 pages per minute (ppm) and 80 images per minute (ipm) (with one image on each side of the page) for scanning in grayscale or black and white at 300 pixels per inch (ppi). That's the same rating it gives the 930u for black and white and grayscale modes.

I ran all of our standard tests for text documents in grayscale mode (which is what Abbyy recommends for OCR) and 300 ppi. For scanning in simplex mode to an image PDF file, the 940u came in at 38.5 ppm. For duplex scans, it came in at 37.5 ppm and 75 ipm. The results are not only reasonably close to the rated speeds, they are identical to the results I got for the Ambir 930u. The 940u had a slight edge scanning to searchable PDF format, at 2 minutes 31 seconds for a 25-sheet, 50-page duplex document, or 5 seconds faster than the 930u, but that's not much of a difference.

Where the two differ significantly is in their scan speed for color. Ambir rates the 940u at 40 ppm and 80 ipm for color mode at 200 ppi. It rates the 930u at only 30 ppm and 60 ipm. For my tests, I scanned in color at 300 ppi, and saw an even bigger difference between the two, with the Ambir 930u coming in at 9.1 ppm and the 940u almost twice as fast, at 18.1 ppm.

Not so incidentally, the results for grayscale scans to image PDF format are pretty impressive. The significantly more expensive Editors' Choice Kodak i2600 was only a little faster than the 940u, at 41.7 ppm for simplex scans and 76.9 ipm for duplex. The speed for scanning to searchable PDF format is less impressive, however, with the 940u slowing down more than some scanners when you add the text recognition step. As a point of comparison, the 940u, at 2:31, was far slower than the Kodak i2600, at 1:16.

Very much on the plus side, the 940u scored well for OCR accuracy, reading our Times New Roman test page at sizes as small as 8 points, and our Arial test page at sizes as small as 5 points, without a mistake.

One other feature worth mention, for those offices that need it, is the ability to scan embossed plastic cards like credit cards or plastic IDs. To scan a card, however, you have to remove a pad module from the scanner before scanning, and replace it afterwards. This could quickly get annoying if you do it often enough, which makes the card scanning best treated as a potentially useful trick for strictly occasional use.

When I reviewed the Ambir 930u I called it a capable performer and a potentially attractive choice for heavy-duty document management and OCR applications. It's also one of the alternatives you need to look at carefully if you're considering the 940u.

Both of these near twins offer excellent text recognition accuracy and virtually the same performance for scanning in black and white and grayscale. Both also offer essentially the same speed for scanning to searchable PDF format. If you don't scan in color very often, however, there's no point in paying extra for a capability you won't use. That said, if you scan color documents on a regular basis, the Ambir ImageScan Pro 940u will give you noticeably faster performance than the Ambir 930u and easily justify the extra cost.

House of Light: Friday Five Talks About Death

The Friday Five is our weekly roundup of links to smart articles and helpful resources across the Web.

1. Bill Keller wrote an interesting opinions piece for the New York Times entitled "How to Die." It's most interesting for its comparison of an England hospital's palliative care program and the United States' method for dealing with a dying patient. It's important that we ask ourselves the really hard questions about how we want to die, and considering the possibility that death does not have to be as difficult as we make it.

2. We loved how this one family decided to tackle on those big end of life care questions, as told in this ABC News story, "Three Generations Gather for End-of-Life Conversation." It's a great conversation between a father and his two adult daughters, recognizing the importance of wanting to be able to fulfill their father's wishes. I found the end of the story especially poignant as the adult grandson also shared his wishes, if anything were to happen to him. End of life planning is not only for the elderly; it's something that could affect any one of us.

3. We stumbled across a lovely essay on The Root, entitled "My Father's Beautiful Death." The writer shared his family's story of their experience with hospice care. I particularly liked this story because it wasn't just about how hospice cared for the patient, but the writer and his family also felt truly embraced and cared for by the hospice. The support for a patient's loved ones is one of the great strengths of hospice care.

4. When it comes to death and dying, families also find they have to deal with plenty of practical issues, such as funeral planning. You can use this Funeral Planning form from the National Caregivers' Library form?to discuss what kind of memorial service your loved one would like.

5. For those of you in or near the Tucson and Pima County area, and interested in expanding your knowledge and education of the end of life experience, the Casa de la Luz Foundation invites you to attend their 12th annual End of Life Educational Conference, "Dying in America: Ensuring the Best Care Possible" with keynote speaker, Dr. Ira Byock, a leading hospice and palliative care physician and bestselling author. Registration is available through the foundation's website. The conference is $65 to attend, and continuing education credits are available.
