Sony's tiny Xperia Tipo headed to O2 and Orange in the UK

Android CentralSony's latest entry-level smartphone, the Xperia Tipo, is set to launch on O2 and Orange in the UK from next month. Announced in mid-June, the pint-size handset comes loaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as well as Sony's UXP NXT software. That makes the Xperia Tipo the first entry-level Sony handset to ship with ICS.

Hardware-wise, the Xperia Tipo provides enough horsepower for a basic Android smartphone experience -- a 3.2-inch screen, an 800MHz CPU, a 3.2MP rear camera and 1500mAh battery, which Sony says can deliver more than 24 hours of usage. Internal storage is split between 768MB for apps and 2.5GB for media, and that's expandable via a microSD card slot. That's all wrapped up in a neatly-designed package reminiscent of last year's Xperia Active.

An O2 "coming soon" page indicates that the Xperia Tipo will be arriving sometime in August. There's no word on pricing yet, but we'd expect the phone to sell for around £100 on Pay As You Go, or to be given away for free with 24 month contracts.

(AP Photo/ Louis Lanzano, File)

(AP) ? A woman who snatched a newborn from a hospital more than two decades ago and raised the child as her own was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison by a judge who called it a "crime of selfishness" that enhanced parents' fears and forced hospitals to boost security.

Ann Pettway, of Raleigh, N.C., nodded her head repeatedly as U.S. District Judge Kevin P. Castel announced his sentence in a Manhattan courtroom packed with relatives and friends of Pettway as well as the true parents of Carlina White, who was stolen from Harlem Hospital when she was only 19 days old.

The 50-year-old Pettway had pleaded guilty to kidnapping in February, describing how she one day in 1987 took a train from her Connecticut home to the hospital, where she posed as a nurse and reassured White's mother, who had brought her daughter to the emergency room for treatment of a high fever.

The sentence was far less than the 20 years in prison recommended by prosecutors and the Probation Department, but it was within the 10 to 12? years agreed to by prosecutors and defense lawyers when a plea agreement was signed.

Castel scolded Pettway, telling her she had "inflicted a parents' worst nightmare on a young couple," caused other parents to fear child kidnappings and led hospitals to install preventive measures to avoid similar kidnappings.

He said it was "not a crime of greed, of vengeance. But it was an act of selfishness, a crime of selfishness."

Pettway apologized, saying she was "deeply sorry for what I have done" and sought to "right my wrong and to ask for forgiveness."

Carl Tyson, the biological father, glared at Pettway, saying: "You hurt me really bad."

Joy White, the mother, said her daughter had found her but: "I still haven't found my daughter."

She said she "can't change how my daughter feels" when she talks about Pettway's relatives as if they are her own.

"My daughter is here, but she's not home yet," she said.

Outside court, Tyson said the sentence "should have been longer," but White said she was satisfied.

"If they gave her 200 years, it's still not going to make up for the time my daughter was gone," she said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea L. Surratt said Pettway told "complicated lies" for 23 years.

In court papers, she challenged Pettway's lawyers' contention that she provided a "stable, loving and happy home," saying Pettway was convicted of five crimes while Carlina was in her custody and had confessed to cocaine use from 1983 through 2005.

In a letter to the judge, Pettway apologized, blaming untreated psychological disorders from her failed pregnancies.

"It may not sound correct on paper but I am hopelessly SORRY," her handwritten note said.

White has described encountering Pettway on the day her daughter disappeared, dressed like a nurse. "She came up to me and said to me, 'Don't cry. Your daughter is going to be OK.'"

The case was solved by Carlina herself.

As she grew up in Connecticut under the name Nejdra Nance, the girl became increasingly suspicious of her own identity. Pettway ultimately told her a part-truth, admitting she was someone else's daughter but claiming she had been willingly given away by a drug addict.

Carlina White said she browsed the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for clues to her identity. After matching a photo of herself with one on the site, she tracked down her true mother and they reunited in January 2011. A DNA test confirmed they were mother and child.

Joy White declined to comment about Carlina White's absence from court Monday.

In court papers, defense lawyers Robert Baum and Sabrina Shroff called Pettway "broken and severely depressed."

The lawyers said Carlina White declined to speak at the sentencing because she didn't want to go back to court and felt she had done enough work finding her biological parents.

They also noted that she is represented by counsel and has a movie project in the works.

Officials: Ebola breaks out in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.

"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.

Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.

On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.

Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.

Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.

The virus can be transmitted in several ways, including through direct contact with the blood of an infected person. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.

In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.

Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area, they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.

"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."

The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.

"Their lives are at stake," he said.

Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

Observations on film art : Digital projection, there and here

Galeries Cin?ma banner, Brussels, 2012.

DB here:

The Cin?ma Arenberg, in the splendid Galerie de la Reine, has long been a mainstay of Brussels film culture. Since 1939, the lovely Art Deco house was what we Americans call an art-house. Over the years Kristin and I visited the city, the Arenberg?s autumn and spring schedules featured recent releases, but every summer the programmers plunged into plucky repertory programs. While he multiplexes ran Hollywood blockbusters, the Arenberg provided 90 or so classics and little-known releases under the rubric of ?cran Total. It was here, for example, that I saw von Trier?s The Kingdom and resaw Vanishing Point. Four years ago I left a little note about the three titles I watched during my last day in town: India Song, Serpico, and Darjeeling Express. That trio gives you a sense of how varied and interesting the programming was.

The Arenberg closed down at the end of 2011, but the cinema has reopened under new management as Galeries Cin?ma. It didn?t sponsor an ?cran Total season this year. Instead it offered?brand-new releases on its three screens, along with some children?s programs.

Most notable for me this time was Leos Carax?s Holy Motors. Whatever you?ve heard about this film is probably accurate. I found it an exhilarating, frustrating, and continuously provocative descent into Surrealist role-playing. It?s a tour of cinema genres and an anthology of bits of other movies, from Marey to Franju, and not forgetting Carax?s own. Especially evocative were the poetic fusions, such as the way that the body stocking Oscar dons for digital motion-capture evokes both ninja outfits and the leotards of Feuillade?s Vampires. Carax films Oscar?s SPFX exercise in a way that connects Muybridge to video games and recalls the exuberantly spasmodic scene?in Mauvais Sang in which Denis Lavant races madly down the street to the accompaniment of David Bowie?s ?Modern Love.?

Whether you find Holy Motors infuriating or beguiling, you won?t forget it.

Exquisitely shot on digital capture, Carax?s film was given crisp, bright digital projection at the Galeries. And speaking of digital projection. . . .

The new issue of Film History, devoted to digital technology?s impact on filmmaking and film culture,?includes Lisa Dombrowski?s article??Not If, But When and How: Digital Comes to the American Art House.? It?s a very fine survey of all the issues facing the art-film community at this moment. Lisa reviews the major technological and financing conditions before going into depth on a case study of three art theatres in Miami. The author of a very good book on Samuel Fuller, Lisa knows how to tie together industrial and aesthetic issues skilfully.

Another young scholar, this one at the Free University of Brussels, has concentrated on the digital transition in Europe. Since 2005 Sophie De Vinck?has been studying how the conversion of theatres fits into European film policy. The result was her 2011 thesis, ?Revolutionary Road? Looking back at the position of the European film sector and the results of European-level film support in view of their digital future.? The thesis, running to a whopping 769 pages, is an immense resource, and not just for people interested in digital cinema. Sophie surveys the history of national and international support of the Western European film industry, from production through exhibition, and she provides both a broad context and very specific analysis.

Part of her argument is that the ?diversity? aimed at by subsidized filmmaking hasn?t been matched by diversity in audiences. But digitization offers a new chance to show films outside the dominant forms of commercial cinema and perhaps attracted new sectors of the public. ?Every innovation usually brings with it possibilities for new?or smaller sector players to strengthen their competitive position.? Her examination of how digital conversion affects small and art-house venues provides a complement to Lisa?s research.

I wish I?d known about Sophie?s thesis when I was writing the blogs that became Pandora?s Digital Box, but at least I can signal her work now. Best news of all: Sophie has generously made ?Revolutionary Road?? available under a Creative Commons license here as a pdf. Full of valuable statistics and well-honed obervations, her work helps us understand how the contemporary European film industry has survived and sometimes flourished over the last fifty years.

Cinema Arenberg, Brussels, 2008. The original design of the curved doorway and neon sign was restored in 2005-2006.

The indispensable site Cinema Treasures has a brief entry on the history of the Cin?ma Arenberg/ Galeries. More extensive information can be found in Isabel Biver?s luxurious survey, Cin?mas de Bruxelles: Portraits et destins, which I wrote about in an earlier entry.

Ukrainian minister says Tymoshenko completes medical treatment

KIEV (Reuters) - Former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, whose jailing for abuse of power soured Ukraine's relations with the European Union, has completed her medical treatment at a local hospital, Healthcare Minister Raisa Bohatyryova was quoted as saying on Friday.

Treatment for a back complaint has kept Tymoshenko, President Viktor Yanukovich's main rival, out of jail for almost three months, and Bohatyryova's statement did not say whether the authorities would now return her to prison.

"An international commission which includes German and Ukrainian doctors ... states that the rehabilitation process has been completed successfully," Interfax news agency quoted Bohatyryova as saying.

The West has condemned Tymoshenko's jailing last October as an example of selective justice and the EU stopped free trade deals and political association with Kiev and urged her release.

But Yanukovich has refused to intervene and state prosecutors have instead piled more charges on Tymoshenko. Hearings in a fresh tax evasion case against her are due to resume on July 31.

Tymoshenko, 51, who was a leader of the 2004 "Orange Revolution" protests which derailed Yanukovich's first bid for the presidency, has dismissed all charges against her as part of political vendetta by Yanukovich.

She served twice as prime minister and narrowly lost the 2010 presidential election to Yanukovich.

A coalition which includes her party Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) will be the main competitor of Yanukovich's Party of the Regions in the October parliamentary election.

On Friday, the Healthcare Ministry declined immediate comment and the prison service could not be reached for comment.

Stewart's affair unlikely to harm 'Twilight' take

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "Twilight" fans are heartbroken by Kristen Stewart's public admission that she cheated on her boyfriend and co-star Robert Pattinson. Some on Twitter are blasting the actress with no shortage of nasty names, while others are pledging support for Pattinson, calling him "sexy" and promising they'd be faithful.

But the scandal involving the on- and off-screen couple is unlikely to affect box-office returns for the final installment in the vampire-romance juggernaut due this fall, or even harm the image of the 22-year-old actress.

"It could make her actually more alluring," said Ian Drew, a senior editor at Us Weekly magazine, which features compromising photos of Stewart and her "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders in its latest issue, out Friday. "It's not like Sally Field did this, so it could actually enhance her appeal and make her even bigger."

Stewart, whom Forbes named Hollywood's highest-paid actress last month, issued an apology to People magazine Wednesday, saying she is "deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected."

"This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob," she said. "I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."

Stewart and Pattinson, 26, have been in a relationship for several years after meeting on the set of "Twilight," in which they play lovers.

Sanders, 41, who is married and has two children, followed with his own apologetic statement to People.

"I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family," he said. "My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world, I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together."

A spokesman for the director confirmed the statement Wednesday. Representatives for Stewart and Pattinson did not respond to requests for comment.

Fans embraced Stewart as human girl Bella Swan and Pattinson as vampire suitor Edward Cullen from the moment they were announced in 2008 as the stars of the big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's popular novels. The real-life romance that bloomed between the co-stars only made things more magical for the mostly female fan base.

"The fans are so romantically tied to this movie in both the real-life romance and the on-screen romance, so I'm sure this is hitting them pretty hard," said box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com. "They think of Bella and Edward and Kristen and Rob like family ? characters they absolutely love on screen and in real life. For a 14-year-old girl, this is probably heartbreaking. But are girls not going to see the movie because of this? Heck no."

Reports of infidelity could even draw more viewers to theaters for Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment's "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," he said: "They might go just so they can be even more mad at Kristen."

Pattinson became an instant heartthrob with his casting as the charming, elegant Edward Cullen. He was included among People magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" in 2008 and has won similar titles from readers of Glamour and OK magazines.

"The shocking thing is (Stewart) cheated on Robert Pattinson, who is this guy who everyone in the world wants," Drew said.

Fans might feel it when they watch the film in November.

"It sort of intrudes on their universe a little bit," he said. "This is the ill-fated romance from the screen that ended up working on screen and in real life as well. That made it more believable and more sellable, so it punctures holes in that."

Still, moviegoers might find the changed dynamic compelling.

"There's a soap opera going on off-screen, and people love to follow that," Dergarabedian said. "I think it only serves to raise awareness of the movie."

Hunter-gatherers, Westerners use same amount of energy, contrary to theory

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Modern lifestyles are generally quite different from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, a fact that some claim as the cause of the current rise in global obesity, but new results published July 25 in the open access journal PLoS ONE find that there is no difference between the energy expenditure of modern hunter-gatherers and Westerners, casting doubt on this theory.

The research team behind the study, led by Herman Pontzer of Hunter College in New York City, along with David Raichlen of the University of Arizona and Brian M. Wood of Stanford measured daily energy expenditure (calories per day) among the Hadza, a population of traditional hunter-gatherers living in the open savannah of northern Tanzania. Despite spending their days trekking long distances to forage for wild plants and game, the Hadza burned no more calories each day than adults in the U.S. and Europe. The team ran several analyses accounting for the effects of body weight, body fat percentage, age, and gender. In all analyses, daily energy expenditure among the Hadza hunter-gatherers was indistinguishable from that of Westerners. The study was the first to measure energy expenditure in hunter-gatherers directly; previous studies had relied entirely on estimates.

These findings upend the long-held assumption that our hunter-gatherer ancestors expended more energy than modern populations, and challenge the view that obesity in Western populations results from decreased energy expenditure. Instead, the similarity in daily energy expenditure across a broad range of lifestyles suggests that habitual metabolic rates are relatively constant among human populations. This in turn supports the view that the current rise in obesity is due to increased food consumption, not decreased energy expenditure.

The authors emphasize that physical exercise is nonetheless important for maintaining good health. In fact, the Hadza spend a greater percentage of their daily energy budget on physical activity than Westerners do, which may contribute to the health and vitality evident among older Hadza. Still, the similarity in daily energy expenditure between Hadza hunter-gatherers and Westerners suggests that we have more to learn about human physiology and health, particularly in non-Western settings.

"These results highlight the complexity of energy expenditure. It's not simply a function of physical activity," says Pontzer. "Our metabolic rates may be more a reflection of our shared evolutionary past than our diverse modern lifestyles."

Touchfire Screen-Top Keyboard for iPad

It's no secret that typing on the Apple iPad's on-screen virtual keyboard can be a pain. There are countless external keyboard accessories, but even unobtrusive ones like the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover?($99, 4 stars) will add some bulk. The Touchfire Screen-Top Keyboard ($49.99) takes a different approach, simply augmenting the onscreen keyboard using a silicon overlay with raised keys. It's easily the thinnest and lightest way to add a tactile feel to on-screen typing, and it'll do the trick in a pinch, but it just doesn't offer the same satisfying feedback you can get with a true physical keyboard.

The Touchfire itself is a thin and clear silicone membrane that measures 9 by 3.5 inches and weighs less than an ounce. There are two plastic tabs at the upper corners, while a thin plastic bar extends across the bottom. The thin plastic bar houses magnets that work in conjunction with the clingy silicone material to hold the Touchfire in place during use. The upper tabs also have magnets that allow it to easily fold out of the way. The Touchfire is compatible with Apple's?Smart Cover and Smart Case?($49, 4 stars) and comes with adhesive magnetic tabs that attach to either one to hold the Touchfire when not in use. It is very thin and feels flimsy, but in my tests, the keyboard withstood plenty of poking, prodding, stretching, and crumpling. It did, however, pick up plenty of dust, hair, and debris, which adversely affected how well it clung to the screen and stayed in place. Luckily you can clean the Touchfire by running it under water, and an included carrying case protects it while in transit.

Inline

The keys are sculpted into the silicone membrane, with raised edges and little bumps towards the center that provide some tactile feedback during presses. Each key corresponds to an onscreen virtual key and they match up well when snapped into place. You should temper your typing expectations with the Touchfire, as a thin layer of silicone can only go so far. Typing away on the Touchfire felt like repeatedly pressing down on half-inflated bubble wrap. It is certainly an improvement over the flat and unyielding onscreen keyboard, but it's no substitute for real physical keys. You can lightly rest your fingertips on the surface of the keys, but applying just a little more pressure will trigger them. Swipes will still register through the Touchfire, and you can also fold it out of the way or simply lift it off. I found my typing to be a little faster and bit more accurate using the Touchfire.

At $50, the Touchfire Screen-Top Keyboard is a bit overpriced. For $99, you can get the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, a top-notch keyboard with true keys, in a slim, sturdy, and protective design that nicely complements the iPad. If thin and light is your number one priority, and you don't foresee many heavy typing tasks, the Touchfire is the most portable way we've seen to add a little tactile feel to your iPad's virtual keys.

Accused Colorado gunman sent notebook to psychiatrist: report

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - The man accused in the movie theater massacre at the opening of the new "Batman" film mailed a notebook detailing his plans to a psychiatrist at his university before the attack, Fox News reported on Wednesday, as the first funeral was held for one of the 12 people killed.

The package allegedly sent by 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes had been in a mailroom at the University of Colorado since July 12 but remained unopened until its discovery on Monday, a law enforcement source told FoxNews.com.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Messages left with police in Aurora and other law enforcement officials involved in the case were not immediately returned.

A spokesman for the FBI's Denver office said the bureau could not speak about any aspect of the investigation because the judge in the case had issued a protective order on Tuesday that strictly limits what attorneys, law enforcement and court staff can say publicly about the case.

The Fox News report said police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus in Aurora on Monday morning after a psychiatrist who is a professor at the school reported receiving a package believed to be from the suspect.

Although that package turned out to be from someone else and harmless, a search of the Campus Services' mail room turned up another parcel sent to the psychiatrist with Holmes' name in the return address, the source told Fox News.

After obtaining a search warrant, police took the package away and discovered its contents.

Fox News quoted its source saying: "Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people. There were drawings of what he was going to do in it -- drawings and illustrations of the massacre."

Images in the notebook included drawings of stick figures shooting at other stick figures, the FoxNews.com report said.

Fox News did not identify the psychiatrist. Holmes was a doctoral student in neuroscience at the Anschutz campus until filing paperwork to drop out in June.

University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery confirmed in a written statement that a suspicious package was delivered to the campus by mail on July 23 and said it was "immediately investigated and turned over to authorities within hours."

"The anonymous Fox News source that the package was received on July 12 and sat on a loading dock is inaccurate," Montgomery said in the statement.

She declined to discuss the package any further, citing the order by Aurora County District Judge William Sylvester.

Police say Holmes, wearing tactical body armor and a gas mask and toting three firearms, opened fire on a crowded midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Holmes, who was arrested behind the theater immediately after the attack, made his first appearance in court on Monday, appearing sleepy and disoriented. Authorities plan to formally charge him on July 30.

FIRST FUNERAL

Hundreds gathered on Wednesday at the nondenominational Pathways Church in Denver for the first funeral for a victim of the July 20 massacre.

Gordon Cowden, at 51 the oldest victim of the shooting, was a real estate appraiser who had taken his teenage daughters to the movie theater where he was killed. His daughters escaped unharmed.

An excerpt from the funeral program attributed to his daughter Brooke read: "I will never forget that in such disorientation and confusion of that night what was certain were your yells, declarations of 'I love you' to both of us. Forever, with love, Brooke."

Joyce Zounis, who knew Cowden through a single parents group at her Aurora church, said Brooke Cowden gave an emotional speech during the service in which she recounted dancing with her father at an outdoor concert in June.

"Little did she know, this would be her last dance with her dad," Zounis, 50, said.

Doug Newman, a friend of Cowden, said the grief inside the church was "pretty intense."

"I'm in absolute shock," Newman said. ""I haven't been myself for a few days."

Services for Cowden came as 19 of those injured in the shooting remained hospitalized, seven in critical condition.

HOSPITALS HELP COVER MEDICAL COSTS

Children's Hospital Colorado said on Wednesday that it would use donations to cover the medical expenses of any victims who lacked insurance and would waive co-pays or deductible related expenses for those with insurance.

HealthOne, which owns Medical Center or Aurora and Swedish Medical Center in Denver, said it would limit or eliminate hospital charges "as appropriate to each patient and the circumstances these individuals find themselves in."

HealthOne said it would not discuss any specific patient out of respect in order to respect privacy.

Judge Sylvester ruled on Tuesday that no cameras would be allowed in the courtroom when Holmes is charged next Monday. Holmes' initial appearance on Monday was televised.

Authorities have not offered a motive for the shooting spree. Police said Holmes, a former neuroscience student, left his 800-square-foot (75-square-metre) apartment booby-trapped with explosives that authorities said could have destroyed the entire complex.

Local and state bomb experts conducted a controlled demolition over last weekend.

On Wednesday members of Holmes' defense team spent about 45 minutes in the apartment, taking notes and videotaping the scene. Attorneys declined comment to reporters as they left.

Holmes, who authorities say dyed his hair red and told them he was The Joker in reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners.

The shooting rampage has renewed debate in the United States about gun control. At the same time, Colorado authorities said on Tuesday that applications in the state for background checks to buy firearms surged in the aftermath of the shooting.

Toyota takes first-half global sales lead from GM

TOKYO (AP) ? Toyota has bounced back from safety recalls and natural disasters to retake the crown as the world's top automaker from General Motors.

The Japanese automaker says it sold 4.97 million vehicles globally in the first half of the year. That's 300,000 more than GM's 4.67 million. Both companies released their numbers on Wednesday.

The lead will make it difficult for GM to catch Toyota in the second half of the year.

Toyota's numbers show that it has recovered from last year's earthquake and flooding and a series of embarrassing safety recalls.

GM says its sales will grow as it revamps 70 percent of its U.S. model lineup in the next two years.
