Hoffman, Letterman among Kennedy Center honorees

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Dustin Hoffman and David Letterman will soon find themselves in company they never expected in the nation's capital.

The actor and comedian are among seven people receiving the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors, according to an announcement Wednesday. They join Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy, rock band Led Zeppelin and ballerina Natalia Makarova.

The nation's highest honor for those who have influenced American culture through the arts comes with a nod from President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The honorees will be saluted by fellow performers Dec. 2.

The 75-year-old Hoffman says it seems harder to win the Kennedy Center Honors than the Oscars or Golden Globes. He says he's honored and flattered to be included.

Letterman says there must have been a "mix-up." But he says he's grateful.

O.J. Simpson-Khloe Kardashian Bombshell: Alleged Killer Changes Will to Include Rumored Offspring!

O.J. Simpson believes Khloe Kardashian is his daughter and plans on changing his will to reflect this fact.

According to a new story in The National Enquirer, that is.

The same tabloid that first floated the Kardashian-belongs-to-O.J. rumor in January is now fueling that seemingly absurd allegation by claiming Simpson wants to "do the right thing" and leave a sizable chunk of his estate to the reality star.

Moreover, he wants to do it at older daughter Arnelle's expense, an anonymous insider claims, because Simpsons thinks she has squandered his money on a lavish, drunken lifestyle.

Khloe Kardashian on the Red Carpet

Currently sitting in a prison cell, convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping, O.J. has stashed away a couple million in the Cayman Islands and can expect more over the years due to his NFL pension, which pays him an annual sum of $300,000.

Based on this story, Simpson told his four kids - Arnelle, Jason, Sydney and Justin – that he's changing his will to give a lot of that fortune to Khloe... and their reaction was less than enthusiastic.

“At first they thought he was just making a big joke, but when they realized he was serious, they were flabbergasted,” says a source. “They are furious and wonder why they have to share the wealth with a complete stranger.”

The children should just be thankful they're alive, really. But they don't see it that way.

“By cutting Arnelle out of his will, his kids feel O.J. is being cruel," adds the insider. "And they think that adding Khloe is just plain revenge. I’m sure if O.J. kicks the bucket and leaves Khloe money in his will, she’s not going to turn it down."

We're equally sure. Almost as sure as we are that Khloe Kardashian is not actually O.J. Simpson's daughter.

Washington Redskins v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

Despite what you may have heard, the replacement officials working in the NFL while the regular officials remain embroiled in a contract negotiation are doing just fine.

Plenty of people have complained about the replacement refs today after watching them make mistakes on Sunday, but it?s important to remember that plenty of people complain about the regular refs after every NFL Sunday. That?s what football fans, media members and players do. There?s no doubt that the replacement officials have made mistakes, but the regular officials make mistakes, too.

I agree with Jim Daopulos, who spent 11 years as an NFL on-field official and 12 years as an NFL supervisor of officials, who said on Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network that the replacement officials have improved from the preseason, when he would have graded them a D, to the first week of the regular season, when he would grade them a B.

Many of the fans and members of the media who have bashed the replacement officials have actually been wrong themselves and criticized the replacements for calls they got right. For instance, a Deadspin post on supposed errors by the replacements says that ?one of the most glaring mistakes? came when the Redskins got a first down following a five-yard penalty even though they were more than five yards away from a first down. In reality, the officials got that one right: In the sequence in question, the Redskins got the ball on the 20-yard line on a touchback, then threw an incomplete pass on first down, got a gain of slightly more than five yards on second down and threw an incomplete pass on third down before the Saints were called for a five-yard offside penalty on fourth down. Deadspin illustrated this alleged mistake with video footage that appeared to show the Redskins running their third-down play with the ball being snapped just short of the 25-yard line, which would suggest that a five-yard penalty wouldn?t be enough to get the ball to the 30-yard line for a first down. But in reality the ball was spotted past the 25-yard line, and it only looked like it was short of the 25 because the Redskins? center tilted the ball back when he lined up.

Some of the other so-called mistakes in the Deadspin post ? and in other complaints I?ve seen from other media outlets and from players and fans ? have been judgment calls about penalties like pass interference, which we all know is a notoriously difficult rule to enforce consistently no matter who the officials are. Saying you disagree with a pass interference call is one thing. Saying you?re sure the regular refs would have called it the way you saw it is something else.

And that gets to the real question: Not whether or not the replacement officials made any mistakes on Sunday ? of course they did, just as players and coaches made mistakes ? but whether the replacement officials made more mistakes than the regular officials would have. I only saw two officiating mistakes on Sunday that I felt confident the regular officials wouldn?t have made. One was the timeout fiasco late in the Seahawks-Cardinals game, and the other was being out of position when Peyton Manning called for a quick snap to catch the Steelers with 12 players on the field in Denver. On the timeout situation, the replacement ref has admitted he didn?t know the rule, and I think a regular ref probably would have (although that same rule was called incorrectly by a regular ref in a 2009 game). And the experienced regular refs surely all know by now that when Manning is operating the no-huddle offense, they need to spot the ball and get into position quickly between plays.

If the replacement officials made two more mistakes than the regular officials would have, that?s two too many. But it?s not the officiating debacle that some are making it out to be. I?d like to see the lockout end because I?d like to see the best officials on the field, but I?m not going to pretend the replacement officials are all a bunch of incompetent buffoons, because they?re not. They?re mostly doing solid work.

Here?s Jim Daopulos going over the officiating issues from Week One:

Pressman iPieces Snakes & Ladders

By Will Greenwald

The iPad?{{/ziffcse} has led to several advances in making games more interactive, thanks to its large touch screen and portability. It's basically a 10-inch game board you can touch and manipulate in real time, so it's perfect for board games. Pressman tries to capitalize on this with its iPieces games, among which include the classic Snakes & Ladders game. This $12.99 (direct) game includes game pieces and ladders to place on the iPad screen while you play the free Snakes & Ladders app [downloadable from the iTunes App Store]. It's a nice idea, but the implementation is completely disappointing.

The box contains four game pieces, each a different color, and two plastic "ladders." The game pieces and ladders both have felt pads on the bottom that activate the iPad's capacitive touch screen and make the free app respond. You put the pieces on the game board in the app, place ladders when the rules allow you, and that's it. It's no different than playing a conventional board game with conventional pieces, except they have pads at the bottom to work with the iPad.

The app consists of a virtual board, a virtual die, and that's it. Everything is done manually, from moving the pieces to "placing" the ladders (which can only be used on certain tiles). When you place a piece on a tile, a white star appears to show you it has been placed. That star means nothing, and the star will appear if you tap any tile, regardless of how the roll went. You can even tap the last tile and get the winning screen without rolling the die or moving a piece. It makes no effort to tie the pieces and the interactivity of the iPad together into a game that enhances the board game itself. You could just as easily play with your fingers, or coins, or any other small object on the app, or use the pieces on a piece of paper with a grid drawn on it. The two disparate elements of the game, the physical pieces and the virtual board, don't interact with each other in any real way, making the game feel shallow and pointless.

Snakes & Ladders highlights how some games become redundant with technology upgrades if they don't innovate the game during the upgrade. It's a nice concept to use an iPad as a virtual board for a board game, but without adding any features that utilize the touch screen, you're playing the same game you'd be playing if you had a sketchpad or a piece of cardboard and drew squares and snakes on it.

Joe Biden buddies up to Ohio bikers

SEAMAN, Ohio (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden was looking to cozy up with voters as he toured Ohio this weekend, but he did not imagine that an Ohio woman would nearly end up in his lap.

Biden was chatting up customers in the Cruisers Diner in southern Ohio Sunday when he met a group of motorcycle riders in black leather vests and bandanas.

A female group member was watching, and Biden waved her over, telling her, "I know who runs the show."

The woman had no place to sit, so Biden pulled a chair in front of himself and pulled her nearly into his lap. He put his hands on her shoulders and leaned in for a conversation as photographers snapped away.

Biden was on his way to a speech in nearby Milford.

College football structure has NFL feel to it

Fall football Saturdays look an awful lot like NFL Sundays, and not everyone is on board with the growing transformation.

College football has taken on a power structure similar to the NFL ? which is king of the sports world with its on-field product and popularity across the country.

While there are those who are fighting to hold off the change, Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe says colleges should want to duplicate that success.

"I think that's always the direction you're moving in," Grobe said. "You're always trying to get better. The model's professional sports. I don't think that's true just for college football, but for every college team, all sports. You try to look at what the professionals are doing and do as many things like them as you possibly can.

"I think the college game's still a little unique because of all the different styles but I think there's no question you're trying to get better, and if you're trying to get better, you're looking at the best."

And emulating the best. At times, the two multi-billion dollar industries are difficult to tell apart.

? College presidents and chancellors have roles similar to NFL owners, while their athletic directors resemble general managers ? in charge of making the key hires that keep interest high and dollars flowing.

? When it comes to season tickets, colleges frequently make buyers pay for the right to purchase their seats in the form of donations to booster clubs ? much like those ubiquitous personal-seat licenses in the NFL.

? Inside mammoth stadiums you'll likely spot a towering set of suites. One of them probably belongs to the school president or chancellor, who's entertaining rich and famous VIPs much like what goes on in the owner's boxes at NFL stadiums.

? And now there's a made-for-TV playoff coming to college football in a couple of years, and some projections have it generating as much interest ? though perhaps not quite as much money ? as the NFL's crown jewel, the Super Bowl.

Critics of the progression say the bottom-line approach is getting in the way of a university's real responsibility ? education.

Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin said he understands why there are raised eyebrows at the amount of money college football generates.

The Bulldogs are right in the middle of the cash grab as part of the behemoth Southeastern Conference ? recently announcing a $75 million expansion of Davis Wade Stadium that will push its capacity to 61,337 seats. The expansion plans call for more luxury seating, a second high-definition video board and other amenities that would make many NFL teams proud.

Even with the expansion, MSU's stadium will rank just 12th out of 14 in the league in capacity.

Defending league champion LSU wants to make already imposing Tiger Stadium even bigger, planning to borrow $75 million to add seats and suites and push the capacity past 100,000 by the 2014 season. That will give the SEC three stadiums with six-figure capacities ? Tennessee and Alabama are already there.

Stricklin said any sort of "competitive marketplace" means costs will inevitably rise, but that schools haven't forgotten the importance of the classroom or using the football program to benefit the entire university.

"We exist to educate," Stricklin said. "The reason why college athletics exist is to market and promote the university, and give a reason to get people to come back and be engaged. It's just a different dynamic ? drastically different. Our core product is to create great experiences for alumni, whereas in the professional ranks you simply make as much money as possible."

Still, both college and pro football have the same powerful revenue source ? television.

The Pac-12 is launching its own TV network this season, following a template set up by the Big Ten in 2007 that has yielded millions of dollars for its teams during the past five years. The SEC expanded to 14 teams this year and broadened its geographic footprint by adding two schools located in major media markets ? Texas A&M and Missouri ? possibly with a television network of its own on the horizon.

In Texas ? where the only team that surpasses the Longhorns' popularity is the NFL's Dallas Cowboys ? the university has teamed with ESPN to create its own network.

And while the BCS has generated significant dollars during the past 15 years, an even bigger payday figures to roll in once the FBS begins determining its champion with a four-team playoff. Conservative estimates have the TV rights to the new system being valued at least double what the BCS was worth ? at least $300 million, but perhaps upwards of $500 million.

Texas President Bill Powers said he understands the NCAA-NFL comparisons, but also stressed that differences are important.

"I think we have to guard against going to an NFL kind of structure, but I think there's a commitment to the collegiate student-athlete structure," Powers said. "And from what I see ? I spent a lot of time around it ? it's a different experience for fans and for the student-athletes than NFL football, in the same way that college basketball is different from the NBA."

To the fans and television viewers the college and pro games may look similar. But perhaps lost in the shuffle is that for the players, the NFL and the college game are worlds apart. During the academic year practice time is regulated by the NCAA and players must hit not only ball carriers ? but the books, too.

"The experience for the student-athlete is not NFL football," Powers said, "and I think it's very important to keep it that way."

Dave Campo has had a close view of both sides.

The new Kansas defensive coordinator was on Jimmy Johnson's staff at Miami when the Hurricanes won a national championship in 1987, followed him to the Cowboys and later spent three years as the NFL team's head coach. From his perspective, even as the college game adopts NFL traits of the NFL, the needs of college players generally don't change.

"When you get to this level, you're still talking to young men. When you coach in the NFL, it's more of a family situation," Campo said. "The guys you deal with on the college level are more like your children in a lot of ways. From a role standpoint, they're still trying to figure out who they are. I like that part of it.

"I don't necessarily think the guys look at me like a parent, but I certainly feel like I'm more of an influencer" in their lives, he added. "The game of football is a lot more than lining up on Saturday and playing a game. There are a lot of life lessons in there. I think the younger the players you deal with, the more it becomes a factor."

History of Video Games

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:03 AM PDT

Way back in 1961, a talented team of programmers led by Steve "Slug" Russell developed the world's first video game: Spacewar. A lot has changed since then, but the fundamentals of what makes a good video game are still the same now as they were back in the 1960s.

No more hogging deck chairs on Carnival ships

Carnival Expands Seat-Saving Initiative Fleet-wide
Following a highly successful pilot program on Carnival Breeze, Carnival Cruise Lines has begun a fleetwide rollout of a new system designed to ensure that all guests are able to enjoy equal access to sun loungers by preventing seat saving in outdoor deck areas.

Under the new system, shipboard team members monitor sun lounge usage and if they observe a seat that contains a towel or personal belongings but appears to be unoccupied, a notification is placed on the chair indicating the current time.? If the chair remains unoccupied for 40 minutes, the contents are removed and held for the guest?s safekeeping.

The expanded policy is scheduled to be introduced on a gradual basis over the next couple of weeks, with fleetwide implementation on all 24 Carnival ships expected by mid-September.

Guests will be advised of the new system via public address announcements by the cruise director, signage in outdoor deck areas, messages displayed on the Seaside Theater poolside LED screen, as well as notices in ?Fun Times,? the daily shipboard newsletter.

CLIA Cruise Lines Offering More Choice, Value with New Shorter Cruises
While that most famous of circumnavigators, Phileas Fogg, inspired the notion of sailing around the world in 80 days, most people today are lucky if they can take a two-week vacation. ? In response to an increasingly time deprived society, many members of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), including luxury and specialty lines, report a trend towards new short, or shorter, cruise sailings in all parts of the world.? These ?mini? or ?sampler? cruises are proving popular with frequent as well as first-time cruisers.

In a recent CLIA conducted survey, the association?s cruise line member lines say that short cruises have strong appeal for a broad range of vacationers of all ages, from the new-to-cruising set, to families, working professionals to honeymooners to independent travelers seeking to combine a cruise with land programs.? And, perhaps because they are less expensive compared to longer voyages offered by the same cruise line, shorter cruises can stimulate last-minute travel decisions.

Driving the trend are a number of factors at home and abroad.? The increase in domestic ports of embarkation ? more than 30 in North America ? has opened up the world of cruising to a far greater vacation market.? Carnival Cruise Lines, for example, estimates that half the population of the U.S. is now within driving distance of a cruise port.? Short cruises, historically the ?entry? market for the industry, are effective in building interest in the newer ports and cruise lines have responded with more offerings.? Carnival officials indicate that 50 percent of the company?s capacity is devoted to short cruises.

Globalization of the industry also has driven the increase in short cruises.? The Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico/West Coast, traditional short cruise markets, remain strong, but travelers looking to sample the cruise experience or to find a vacation that fits a busy work life will discover new short cruises in other destinations such as Europe where many CLIA members have increased capacity, even year-round deployment, in order to attract European vacationers.

Regal Princess Keel Laying

Princess Cruises Announces Name of Next New Ship:? Regal Princess
Princess Cruises recently marked the beginning of construction of the second of its new generation of ships with the official keel laying ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. At the same time the line announced that the ship?s name will be Regal Princess.

The vessel, a sister ship to Royal Princess, will debut in Spring 2014. The company and shipyard officials started the countdown to the ship?s launch today as the keel ? the bottommost part of the ship ? was ceremoniously lowered into position in the building dock.

Following a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship?s keel ? which weighs approximately 500 tons ? was moved into position by a huge crane onto the keel blocks. The computer-guided maneuver took only minutes, belying the more than 2 million man hours that will ultimately go into building the vessel. The 3,600-passenger, 141,000-ton ship will remain in the building dock until its float-out next summer.

Regal Princess will offer many of the same special features as Royal Princess, which debuts in June 2013. Among these are a greatly expanded atrium, the social hub of the ship; a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel; plush private poolside cabanas that appear to be floating on the water; the new Princess Live! television studio; a pastry shop; a special Chef?s Table Lumiere, a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; and balconies on all outside staterooms.

NCL?s Pride of America to Receive Major Enhancements Including New Suites and Studio Staterooms
Norwegian Cruise Line today announced that the latest vessel in the company?s ship revitalization program, Pride of America, will enter dry dock in March 2013 for major enhancements, including the addition of new luxurious suites and studio staterooms.

Pride of America enters a 14-day dry dock on March 23, 2013 in Honolulu, Hawai`i. The 2,124-passenger ship will receive major renovations including the addition of 24 ultra-luxurious suites, four Studio staterooms and four inside staterooms; Moderno Churrascaria, the line?s signature Brazilian-style steakhouse; ship wide wireless internet connectivity; new carpeting throughout; flat screen televisions in all staterooms; updated d?cor; upgrades to the fitness center; new directional signage; renovations to the gift shop, photo gallery and art gallery; and much more.

FDA clears Pfizer Bosulif cancer drug

PBR Staff Writer Published 05 September 2012

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pfizer's Bosulf (bosutinib) to treat adult patients with chronic, accelerated or blast phase Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) (CML) with resistance to prior therapy.

Bosulif is a kinase inhibitor that stops the cancer cell growth by inhibiting the Abl and Src signaling pathways.

The drug is the only therapy approved with pivotal trial data that included CML patients treated with imatinib followed by a second generation TKI, according to the company.

Pfizer Oncology Business Unit president and general manager Garry Nicholson said Bosulif is the third new medicine from Pfizer Oncology's pipeline to be approved by the FDA in just 13 months.

"By focusing our pipeline on those compounds best positioned for advancement, we have been able to bring yet another important therapy to patients who urgently need it," Nicholson added.

Pfizer Oncology Business Unit Clinical Development and Medical Affairs vice president Mace Rothenberg said, "We believe many doctors and CML patients will find this treatment to be a welcome addition, offering a distinct adverse event profile and a convenient once-daily dosing regimen."

'Kumar' star pokes fun at Eastwood's chair skit

Eric Thayer / REUTERS

Kal Penn addresses the Democratic National Convention.

?

By E!Online

Who knew that political conventions could make an empty chair and the hashtag #sexyface go viral? "Harold and Kumar" star (and former White House staffer) Kal Penn took the podium Tuesday during the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina, and wasted no time before referencing Clint Eastwood's RNC address last Thursday.

Hear what Nancy Pelosi had to say about Clint Eastwood!

Penn -- who asked tweeters to use #sexyface when referencing his speech on Twitter -- first acknowledged that he has "worked on a lot of fun movies," but noted that his favorite job was working for "a boss who gave the order to take out Bin Laden and who's cool with all of us getting gay married."

And then the Eastwood remark came, "So thank you, invisible man in the chair, for that."

Afterwards, Penn listed specific examples on how Barack Obama's policies have helped fellow Americans, and urged everyone to vote.

Have you seen all of the Clint Eastwood RNC empty-chair memes? ?

"We can't turn back now," he said. "I ask all of you young people to join me. You don't even have to put pants on. Go to commit.barackobama.com and register right there."

Barney Frank: More stimulus would reduce food stamp rolls [VIDEO]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Barney Frank told The Daily Caller that there would be ?fewer? food stamp recipients in America if Republicans did not block additional federal stimulus spending for state and local projects supported by congressional Democrats.

TheDC asked Frank about the record 46.7 million Americans currently receiving food stamp benefits.

?Well, there?s a record number of people in America. You know, every year things tend to go up. It?s why it needs to have a important program, it?s why I wish we got more cooperation from the Republicans in trying to do the things that would help us economically like not have the cities have to lay off firefighters and cops,? Frank told TheDC at the Democratic National Convention.

?I wish we were spending less in Afghanistan, where we?re wasting a great deal of money. I?m glad the president got us out of Iraq, but I think it shows that our spending priorities are out of whack and if we took some of those billions that we?re now wasting in Afghanistan and put them to work here in our cities then we would have fewer people in that situation.?

In February 2009, the Democratic-controlled Congress passed an $831 billion stimulus package.

Last year, President Barack Obama pushed Congress to pass his jobs act, which would provide states and localities with additional federal stimulus funds to hire firefighters, police and teachers. The White House advocated for a surtax on millionaires to pay for the legislation. The bill never made it out of Congress.

When Obama took office in January 2009, 31,983,716 Americans were receiving food stamps, compared to 46,670,373 people on food stamps as of June 2012.

Got Home Improvement Plans? Read This Advice! | Roofing Repair ...

Performing your own home improvements doesn?t have to be overwhelming, but people experienced with remodeling, repairing, and improving their homes know that a few simple tips and tricks can make a huge difference. If you?re thinking of embarking on some new home improvements, bear the following tips in mind to make sure everything goes right and nothing goes wrong.

Having new windows installed in your home can be very beneficial. Old windows often do not have a tight seal and allow heat and air to escape, causing an increase in your monthly electric bill. Double pane, vinyl windows are a great choice. Not only do they make your home more energy efficient, but they are easy to clean and increase your home?s value.

If you are thinking of selling your home and want to do some renovations to spruce up the place, say no to wallpaper. Wallpaper is a huge waste of time and money. The first thing that new homeowners do when they move into a new home is rip off the old wallpaper, so don?t bother with it and paint instead.

If you have a large, open kitchen, consider building or buying a movable kitchen island. An island can be covered with tile, granite, or marble tops, making it the perfect extra surface for preparing meals, serving food, finishing up homework, or as a makeshift mini-bar that goes wherever you need it to. Many models include storage features like drawers, hooks, and built-in cutting blocks.

Improve your home by cutting your energy costs. Check with your utility company to see if they offer energy audits of homes. There are a lot of changes you can make to make your home more energy efficient saving hundreds of dollars a year depending on the amount of changes you can make. It also adds a great selling point for a house for the future.

A great way to add value to your home is to add a sun room to the back of your house. Any time you add square footage to your home, you are increasing its value. Additionally, a sun room looks great, giving your home more appeal to a buyer.

A good home improvement tip is to make sure you write up a contract with your handyman when they come out to assess any problems. By having a firm contract, you won?t have to worry about any extra charges or being exploited. Without a contract, you could be taken for a ride.

Updating your home can be an expensive and lengthy process. However, if you are aware of the advantages and disadvantages of engaging in any home improvement project, no matter how large or small, you can save both time and money. By following the advice in this article, you can avoid common pitfalls and learn the best ways to make the most of your investment in your home.

Commercial Loans and How to Avoid Zombie Banks | Akira Daily ...

Article by Stephen Bush

With virtually any conceivable commercial financing situation, it should be beneficial for commercial borrowers to understand what constitutes a ?Dead Bank Walking? and what they should do about it if they are in fact working with a ?Zombie Bank?. Ultimately it is not likely to be in the best interest of a business owner to have extensive involvement with any of the banks which these terms describe accurately. Although recent discussions using these colorful terms have an element of entertainment and humor, there is a practical aspect as well. The impact for commercial loans can be far-reaching because the terms zombie banks and dead banks walking have been applied recently to quite a few commercial banks.

For any business owner currently needing a commercial loan or working capital financing, the concept of ?Dead Banks Walking? is likely to be an essential part of their decision. This description has been used by several sources recently, all with a similar reference point of banks which have already gone broke. This critical but apparently accurate assessment is largely derived from a straightforward net worth approach. Such an analysis recognizes that many banks have substantial assets which are either worthless or at least worth well below the values reflected on their books, with the resulting real current value being less than the current debts of many banks.

Based on the evaluation of many observers who have realistically reviewed current asset values, most of the largest banks in the United States been shown to be worth even less than Lehman Brothers (which is already in bankruptcy). Many banks have compounded their public relations nightmare by demonstrating very little common sense in how they make commercial loans and spend money. If a bank is already worthless, it certainly calls into question how businesses and commercial borrowers will benefit by the government throwing money at these ?zombie banks? in the first place. The failure of most banks to increase their commercial lending to business owners after receiving government bailout funds has fueled the controversy involving bank survival. The apparent result so far has preserved the solvency of banks (for the time being) by giving them cash which most are hoarding rather than actually improving liquidity by increasing commercial finance funding to businesses.

This raises several questions. Overall there is an emerging consensus that giving otherwise bankrupt companies (the zombie banks) more operating cash does little beyond covering the payroll for the dead banks walking.

First, should we really believe that a bank should be ?saved? simply because it is so large? There appears to be a growing majority of the public which would suggest that these banks have already lost too much good faith to ever recover in response to some arguments that the largest banks cannot be taken over even if they are already insolvent.

Second, is there a better way to solve the problem than giving insolvent banks more money? George Soros and others have recently described in detail how other banking systems have successfully handled mortgage financing. This is a critical point because residential and commercial real estate loans are widely agreed to be at the heart of the current problem, but so far there is no real effort underway to change the failed process.

Third, can business owners really afford to wait for the government to solve this problem? Although waiting a few weeks or even several months might be viable for a practical solution which results in needed commercial loans, the current logjam impacting business finance funding shows little evidence of subsiding that quickly. Prudent commercial borrowers should seek alternative sources for essential working capital financing such as business cash advances. In case it is not obvious from the discussion above, dead banks walking and zombie banks can be avoided when seeking new commercial financing.

(AP) ? Louis Oosthuizen had never been to the TPC Boston until his week, although he knew what to expect in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

This is a course that tends to favor power, and the South African has plenty of that. It's also a course where players make a lot of birdies, and no one has made more than his 19 over the opening three rounds.

"If you're playing well, you can shoot really low numbers," Oosthuizen said.

Oosthuizen carried out the scouting report to near perfection Sunday in the third round, at least for a two-hour stretch that was close to flawless. He made eight birdies in a nine-hole stretch ? the exception was No. 3, where he missed a 5-foot birdie putt ? before he cooled down on the back nine and had to settle for an 8-under 63.

It was enough to build a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, who was exceptional on the back nine to post a 67 that kept the tournament from getting away from him.

Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson were still in the mix, just barely. Woods made back-to-back birdies late in his round for a 68, while Johnson's Ryder Cup hopes took a strong turn in the right direction with a 65.

Oosthuizen set a trio of tournament records on another sun-filled day south of Boston, until some dark clouds and a light rain showed up in the final hour. He made seven straight birdies. He shot a 29 on the front nine. And he completed 54 holes in 19-under 194.

But the Labor Day conclusion was sure to include a lot more work ahead for Oosthuizen.

Yes, the TPC Boston allows for birdies, though not just for him. McIlroy and Johnson also have 19 birdies going into the final round. And while Woods has never come from further than five shots behind to win on the PGA Tour, six years ago in Boston he rallied from three back with a 63 that toppled Vijay Singh by two shots.

To see Oosthuizen threaten to run away from the field was not discouraging as much as it indicated what was out there. Earlier on Sunday, Keegan Bradley had a 63 despite a bogey on the 17th and failing to make birdie on the par-5 18th.

"With the conditions like this, we're going to have to shoot some good numbers," Woods said. "It's definitely gettable. Louis played a good round, Keegan played a good round early. You can post 4, 5, 6 under par on that front nine if you get it going early. The back nine is certainly gettable, as well. I think I shot 30 on the front nine against Vijay. I'm going to need a quick start like I had that day.

"That's basically what Louis did and that's what Keegan did, as well," he said. "You get off to quick starts, you can get it going."

Oosthuizen had some help with a pure putting stroke that matched his sweet, simple swing, which has become the envy of the PGA Tour. His birdie streak began with a chip from behind the short par-4 fourth hole to 6 feet. He had a simple up-and-down from next to the green on the par-5 seventh. And it ended with a shot into 2 feet on No. 10. Along the way, he holed birdie putts of 20 feet on Nos. 5 and 6, a 40-footer on the par-3 eighth and a 25-foot birdie putt on the ninth.

"After making the putt on 8, I felt like I can't miss anything," Oosthuizen said. "And then on 9, you just needed to get it high enough out, and then it's all about the speed, and I got it perfect again. ... You know, standing on the putt on 11, I thought I had a perfect line again. The last thing I thought was missing it."

Alas, he missed it, though not by much.

It was at that point in the round McIlroy came back to life. He started the third round with a one-shot lead, played reasonably well for 10 holes and was six behind. Then, Boy Wonder had to watch the South African hit a tee shot on 11 that covered the flag, just a little strong to 20 feet beyond the hole. McIlroy went after his shot, high with a gentle draw that dropped next to the hole and settled 6 feet behind the flag.

He rolled it in for a birdie, then stood at the back of the green waiting for Oosthuizen to clean up his par.

McIlroy held out his arm and clenched his fist and said to Oosthuizen proudly, "I've got honors."

They laughed, exchanged a high-five and walked toward the 12th tee, and McIlroy said with a grin, "I feel like I've got a chance."

Rivalries in golf, at least in the last 50 years, seem to be more interesting when the players are a generation apart. Coming from the same generation, this is a good place to start. McIlroy already has two majors, both by eight shots. Oosthuizen, who never looks like he's going to hit a bad shot, won his sole major by seven shots at St. Andrews in the 2010 British Open.

McIlroy kept up the pace with a tee shot on No. 12 that glided high and far, the longest of the day at 326 yards, setting up a wedge to 5 feet.

"The birdie on 11 sort of sparked things, and I hit a couple of great shots into 12," McIlroy said. "If you're talking about momentum in a round, I think 11 definitely gave me some momentum."

Oosthuizen thought briefly about a 59 ? remember, he once had a 57 on his home course at Mossel Bay along the Garden Route of South Africa ? and had to settle for a 63. He had a six-shot lead on the 10th hole and it was down to only three at the end of the day.

If McIlroy winds up with the trophy Monday, he may well have won it on Sunday afternoon.

"Rory just kept on coming at me, and I knew that," Oosthuizen said. "I knew I needed to make birdies to keep a five- or six-shot lead. So a bit disappointed in that I had a lot of opportunities on the back nine for birdies, and I only made two with a bogey on 17. All in all, started the day one behind, going into tomorrow leading by three. I'm very happy."
